Around 2 and half years ago Robyn and I were planning our route home to Oxford from a trip to Carlisle United and decided to make a game on our way home. Our options were Sunderland Women playing at Eppleton CW or Durham WFC at The Graham Sports Centre, Maiden Castle. We picked Sunderland, mainly due to Eppleton’s history in the Northern League. Since Durham United also use Maiden Castle it, unwittingly turned into a good choice!

When any fan of football in the North East mentions Tow Law it’s elevation is always mentioned. It is 997 feet above sea level, and the football ground in Ironworks Road is extremely exposed so the epithet tends to be that it is always cold at Tow Law. On that basis I did fee that my visit there in September 2014 may have been under false pretences. It was lovely and warm, I didn’t even wear a coat! That was unlikely to be the case this time round…

Saturday on the Northern Hop sawe us head, well north. Certainly from an English perspective the second you cross into Northumberland, you are certainly in the north. I did have a slight advantage heading through the Tyne Tunnel, I’d visited Newbiggin-by-the-Sea on holiday 20 years earlier.

If the other two games that day were all about host clubs new to the Northern League, then the day’s finale was all about a club extremely well entrenched in the league. I’d been speaking to the league’s Mike Amos- who commented to expect a gigantic local derby, with a crowd to match. He wasn’t wrong….

I did wonder what we’d find at FC Hartlepool. While I was aware that the Northern League had scheduled all the games on the hop as local derbies, I did wonder whether we’d lose groundhoppers to alternate games. The way we at GroundhopUK look at it is to see each time slot over a weekend in terms of how many alternate games are there? Obviously that will be a lot, when kick off is anywhere near 3pm, so I was happy to struggle to park when we reached the Grayfields Enclosure.

I think just about everyone enjoyed the previous 2 Easters with Phil Hiscox in the South West Peninsula League, but in that time we at GroundhopUK had been approached by the Northern League. If anyone didn’t know the concept of the organised groundhop was invented by Mike Amos and the Northern League in 1992, and the league ran a series of successful events finishing in 1996, when the league ran out of clubs to visit.

After the trials and tribulations of the Scottish Hop it speaks volumes that a 2 and a half hour drive represented straightforward! Ever since I’d visited Retford United’s great rivals Retford FC, it seemed daft that I’d not visited the ground on the edge of the town. And will all due respect to both clubs, it is Retford United who have the longer history.

When we at GroundhopUK were handed the proposed host clubs for the Scottish Hop one name stood out- Cowdenbeath Central. It was simple as to why, a club new to senior football, on their own ground, those two facts were sure to attract even the most senior groundhoppers! The club’s background though was also interesting!

Things have changed in Westhoughton. We’d become aware of just how much at the start of last year’s hop at Ramsbottom when the attendance at the New Sirs was far higher than ours! Then when we advertised this year’s hop on the GroundhopUK website using a photo at Daisy Hill from a couple of years ago we were told by the club that no, they don’t play at the New Sirs, the ground is now called “The Ginge Power Stadium” as the ground is now sponsored by streamer Angryginge!

It seems a million years ago since the days of the Central Midlands League Hops (the last was in 2012) and these days the league is now the Central Midlands Alliance following a merger with the Midlands Regional Alliance in 2023. Melbourne is a small town in Derbyshire, close to Castle Donington Race Circuit. It is perhaps best known as being the birthplace of Thomas Cook of package holidays fame.
