The season was in its last knockings, but non league in Wales does tend to produce some interesting play-offs. The issue has long been the same, there are more league winners than there are places in the leagues above. Who could forget the playoffs to get into the South Wales Alliance ?

I know why I found myself in Solihull’s environs- local football at the lower divisions is a lot of fun and there”s plenty of it. So much so that I’ve been heading to this part of the world for the best part of twenty years, and I’m still turning up interesting grounds, Wake Green being a case in point.

I think just about everyone enjoyed the previous 2 Easters with Phil Hiscox in the South West Peninsula League, but in that time we at GroundhopUK had been approached by the Northern League. If anyone didn’t know the concept of the organised groundhop was invented by Mike Amos and the Northern League in 1992, and the league ran a series of successful events finishing in 1996, when the league ran out of clubs to visit.

Oh! dream of joy! is this indeed

The light-house top I see?

Is this the hill? is this the kirk?

Is this mine own countree?

Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1797)

As is normal for Robyn and I, we split our time over Christmas between family in Oxford then family in Bristol, so that those days between Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve tend to be spent in Knowle West. Or putting it another way, I do tend to see quite a lot of the Somerset County League at this time of year, and Watchet Town had been on my to-do list for quite a while.

It has to be said there is absolutely no possibility of acting on impulse when you’re watching Championship football. Tickets have to be bought in advance, and since they were for the away end, and Robyn and I don’t live in Bristol we had to discover where to collect our tickets and once there, even to confirm whether the booth in fact, actually had our tickets. Then you need to research where to park- we used the official parking at Watford Grammar School for Girls for £12 and that’s before you think about the M25 at rush hour…

If you take the groundhopping mantra “Everywhere once” literally, I’d have swerved the Withdean Stadium. I visited back in 2001 when Brighton & Hove Albion used here as a lifeboat between the Goldstone Ground, the Priestfield, and the Amex. I had to pretend to be a Darlington fan to get a ticket; all the home areas were sold out, and I perched on a bank of green temporary seats while Brighton won what’s now called League 2. How times change….

It was Swedish Groundhop organiser Kim Hedwall’s last evening with us, and I was on the lookout for something a little different. It was (for now) the final day of the West Wales Premier League Hop- but we knew we had a problem, or more accurately two. The first issue was that we at GroundhopUK knew that both Garden Village and West End had recent history in the Welsh League, and given the crowd we’d attracted on the Saturday there was a fair chance that many of them would have visited the Sunday selection before and so headed for home.

For groundhoppers of a certain age August Bank Holiday always added up to multiple games in Wales. The Welsh Hop lasted from 2002 to 2022 and we all missed the epic events they always were. Any replacement had to be good, and we even ran events without anything on August Bank Holiday for two years. The irony is that you could say the solution to it was in house…
