REDCAR TOWN 1 (Stares 38)

I felt that the juggernaut that is the Northern Hop was beginning to stretch it’s legs as was headed to Middlesbrough. We passeed the Riverside Stadium, itself gearing up for a home game versus Millwall. Grangetown is reasonably close by, at the foot of a flyover- and the boys club here pride themselve on being the largest grassroots club in Middlesbrough.

The Boysie as they are affectionately known have been going since 1941, founded by the North Riding Education Board to provide sport for working class lads. The club gained promotion to the Northern League in 2024 but required a reprieve to avoid relegation last season. This season has also been a struggle, but they were to stay up by their own efforts. Small steps and all that…

In its own way Grange Farm Road is impressive. The club have taken what was an open field, enclosed it, then got floodlights, hard standing and three covered enclosures. It is clearly a case of doing what you can when you can, and the fact that noone at the league looked the slightest bit worried about them spoke volumes, even at this a local derby in front of a massive crowd.

The breakfast rolls sold like bacon always does, and it was lovely to be able to enjoy the moment, knowing the club had got everything under control. As for the game Redcar were in 2nd spot so the away win looked probable, but Grangetown pushed them all the way even down to missing a late late penalty.

I think just about everyone enjoyed the previous 2 Easters with Phil Hiscox in the South West Peninsula League, but in that time we at GroundhopUK had been approached by the Northern League. If anyone didn’t know the concept of the organised groundhop was invented by Mike Amos and the Northern League in 1992, and the league ran a series of successful events finishing in 1996, when the league ran out of clubs to visit.

When we at GroundhopUK were handed the proposed host clubs for the Scottish Hop one name stood out- Cowdenbeath Central. It was simple as to why, a club new to senior football, on their own ground, those two facts were sure to attract even the most senior groundhoppers! The club’s background though was also interesting!

4 game days are always tough, and with St Andrews being substantially further north than the other 3 games, we felt under pressure, particularly with a coach driver light. I understood all too well the East of Scotland League’s desire for the extra game- when else could we head to northern Fife?

We arrived at Lochore Welfare to quite a throng. We knew parking was going to be an issue, the club had organised parking for the coach, and everyone else? Well that rough ground nearby proved to be handy! For those hard of geography we weren’t quite in Lochore, but in Crosshill to be exact.

You could say GroundhopUK and Cowdenbeath go back a fair way. After all Chris Berezai and I visited Central Park back in 2008 to watch Annan Athletic’s first game in the Scottish League, from then the Blue Brazil’s fortunes rocketed, the club were playing in what is now called the Scottish Championship in 2010. But from that zenith the club’s form plummeted, and by the time we visited Kelty Hearts on the 2018 Hop, Cowdenbeath were back in the bottom tier of the SPFL. The assumption seemed to be that Kelty would swap places with the Fife neighbours.

In groundhopping terms at least, a trip to Edinburgh’s Saughton Enclosure was long overdue. We’d planned on visiting as the 4th game on the Saturday of the Scottish Hop back in 2018. That was the year of the cold snap- it was bad enough at the Oriam Indoors, so losing the game at the then titled Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale was not necessarily bad news!!

Things have changed in Westhoughton. We’d become aware of just how much at the start of last year’s hop at Ramsbottom when the attendance at the New Sirs was far higher than ours! Then when we advertised this year’s hop on the GroundhopUK website using a photo at Daisy Hill from a couple of years ago we were told by the club that no, they don’t play at the New Sirs, the ground is now called “The Ginge Power Stadium” as the ground is now sponsored by streamer Angryginge!

Sunday dawned, or more interestly St David’s Day, and the groundhopping tradition of buying my wife Robyn Daffodils. Robyn is from Bristol, and since we visited Albania and our friend Ditmar famously said, “Bristol, isn’t that nearly in Wales?” she’s been teased about being “Welsh” ever since! It’s not often a girl from Bristol walks round Atherton with a bunch of daffs is it?

Is it wrong that I still think of AFC Blackpool as their former selves at Blackpool Mechanics? The club started out in 1947 as Blackpool Metal Mechanics before changing their name to Blackpool Mechanics soon after. They initially played at part of Stanley Park in the town before moving to Jepson Way in 1949.
