When we at GroundhopUK were handed the proposed host clubs for the Scottish Hop one name stood out- Cowdenbeath Central. It was simple as to why, a club new to senior football, on their own ground, those two facts were sure to attract even the most senior groundhoppers! The club’s background though was also interesting!

The roots of the club are to be found in the Blue Brazil Boys Club, with the team being formed in 1996. As the nickname suggests a partnership was formed with Cowdenbeath FC to allow progression from juvenile to adult football between the two clubs. However the link was ended by Blue Brazil two years ago, and they opted to enter adult football on their own. However Cowdenbeath FC objected to them using their club’s nickname so the club entered the East of Scotland League as Cowdenbeath Central. That said, the badge hasn’t changed!

But even now, Cowdenbeath FC are still annoyed as they see Central as a reference to Central Park. I can only imagine what the reception was like when Central dropped off their prepaid programmes with Craig at Central Park a couple of days previously!

Central are based at Venters Park, the name a reference to Alex Venters, a Cowdenbeath-born forward who played in the 1930’s and 40’s for Cowdenbeath and Rangers , picking up 3 caps for Scotland but who died tragically aged only 45. The ground is clearly a work in progress, hardly surprising given Central are making their debut in the league. And while for now the ground is fairly basic the club worked their socks off to cope with a large crowd.

Sadly for them that didn’t add up to a win, despite some typically committed football. Newburgh edged it just but they were made to give everything to earn those three points.
