The more organised hops I help organise the more I feel I can see how the future of the organised hop will pan out. On one hand it would be easy for Chris Berezai and I to simply organise events in leagues we’re interested in. With around 3,000 grounds visited between us that would see lower level leagues featuring, along the lines of the Ceredigion or North Berkshire Leagues, but we both feel that we owe it to those with far lower ground counts to organise events at Step 5 and 6. I was a little nervous as the coach left Leading Drove, for the mile-or-so journey to Daimler Avenue also in Yaxley. Its not as though GroundhopUk hadn’t organised games at lower levels of the game, will we ever visit a club of lower status than say Uffington United? It wasn’t as if the people at Riverside weren’t obviously up for the challenge, I’d enjoyed their company and admired their ideas at the club meetings, but I was very aware that we were at least in part taking some people out of their comfort zones.

There aren’t many advantages of this lousy weather, but a game on a ground not usually used is a bonus. Oakham booked the college pitch, watched as one opponent pulled out then found Yaxley as a late replacement. It offered a tick not usually available, although with Oakham’s ground waterlogged this pitch is set to be used for league games. The Peterborough & District League have none of the hang-ups over a good artificial surface that the Conference do. I am indebted to uber-hopper Brian Buck for alerting Lee West and I to this fixture. Buckingham Town, Chris Berezai, groundhop, Higham Town, ON Chenecks, Peterborough & District League, Peterborough Northern Star, Sleaford Town, the United Counties League, UCL, United Counties League, Woodford United, Yaxley

A week or two ago I was asked by the United Counties League Facebook page to write a guest article. It quite deliberately doesn’t mention the Peterborough & District League, who are also involved in August’s hop, after all it was for a purely UCL audience!

I’m a groundhopper, there I’ve said it, and the United Counties League and I go back to October 2003. I’d just moved to Banbury, and saw that Woodford United were at home to Stewarts & Lloyds. The ground was a devil to find, it helped when the lights were switched on, and I watched S & L triumph once their regular goalkeeper arrived and was substituted on! The people were friendly, and the barbeque tasted as good as it smelled!

I must have enjoyed myself, Continue reading →

Walk on manhole covers

United Counties League Premier Division

YAXLEY 0

PETERBOROUGH NORTHERN STAR 1 (Viera 79)

Entry £6

Programme £1

Yearbook £5

Yaxley, a small village near Peterborough has managed to avoid my attendance for far too long, and for no good reason. Whilst Leading Drove is hardly iconic, it is quirky, the locals are friendly, and they are justifiably proud of their brand new clubhouse and changing room block. That for the hopper is a cleft stick. Yes, the facilities are excellent, but it will mean that in time the quirks will gradually disappear. These include the club shop, PA box, and gatebox all rolled into one, the two cycle shelter stands and the hard standing which is in fact a series of concrete manhole covers! For me, its the quirks that attract me in the first place.

The game wasn’t quite as bad as the low scoreline would indicate. PNS should have won by far more, but it was a passing game, easy on the eye, and it was a pleasure to while away the time with James Rennie, an expert on this part of the world.

Another bonus is that opposite Leading Drove is the pitch used by Stilton FC, that’s my card marked!
