Nothing for sale

A few years ago, I visited United Counties League side Yaxley at their Leading Drove Ground. The car park was full so I parked at a pitch opposite and a little further along the road. I marvelled at how little there was there, literally just a pitch, two dugouts and two goals surrounded by flat fields all the way to the East coast main line in the distance. The highest structure in the place is the two crossbars! I found out that Stilton FC played there, logged the place for future reference, and completely forgot about the place for 3 years! The coach, expertly coaxed by Rick at the wheel made the tight left turn into Leading Drove, and down the narrow drive to the football ground on the left. There’s a pitch to the right, used by Stilton FC, and since they play in the Peterborough & District League the original idea was to have a game there straight after this one, but they turned us at GroundhopUK down for reasons unknown, and with league official Daniel Leggett being an expert on the geography of the PDFL, he approached Riverside in their place, but that is another article!

Yaxley, a small village near Peterborough has managed to avoid my attendance for far too long, and for no good reason. Whilst Leading Drove is hardly iconic, it is quirky, the locals are friendly, and they are justifiably proud of their brand new clubhouse and changing room block. That for the hopper is a cleft stick. Yes, the facilities are excellent, but it will mean that in time the quirks will gradually disappear. These include the club shop, PA box, and gatebox all rolled into one, the two cycle shelter stands and the hard standing which is in fact a series of concrete manhole covers! For me, its the quirks that attract me in the first place.

The game wasn’t quite as bad as the low scoreline would indicate. PNS should have won by far more, but it was a passing game, easy on the eye, and it was a pleasure to while away the time with James Rennie, an expert on this part of the world.

Another bonus is that opposite Leading Drove is the pitch used by Stilton FC, that’s my card marked!
