On Twitter, one of my followers has the following bio, “If it wasn’t for football I wouldn’t know where half the places in the UK are.”

Now that goes double for non-league I suppose; even I had to look up where Bearsted is, and just to make life even more difficult, the football club play in Otham, not Bearsted! Continue reading →

I suppose I see the Isle of Sheppey as Kent’s Yang to Canvey Island’s Essex Ying. The bridge over The Swale is a little more impressive than its Essex counterpart, the slope (to allow for shipping below) is a little disconcerting! Sheppey does have its own quirks though. Continue reading →

The car found the one remaining parking spot in the Elite Venue in Gravesend and Robyn looked doubtful. It was cold, windy, and frankly she didn’t fancy watching a game, any game. So as I headed to the referees’ changing room for the team line-ups she investigated whether she could spend the evening in the clubhouse. I do wonder what she’d have made of this story, if she’d have managed to avoid going in? Continue reading →

SPORTING CLUB THAMESMEAD 3 (Weatherly 22 Patrick 61 Jeffery 71)

CROCKENHILL 1 (Brett 3)

Programme – none, teamsheet FREE

Thamesmead is the kind of town that exists due to circumstance. It’s there to service the docks at Tilbury and other Thames dock towns, themselves only there because the Port of London docks were too small to service the huge new container ships so in the 1960’s the whole operation moved east and the town grew with the new industry. You could say that Docklands’ loss was Thamesmead’s gain, but the club in situ at Bayliss Avenue, Thamesmead isn’t the club that originally called the ground its home. The tale is a little tangled… Continue reading →

Southern Counties East League Premier Division

CORINTHIAN FC 3 (Jones 25 31 Hurcomb 65)

SHEPPEY UNITED 0

Att 72

One look at the name “Corinthian” will have the reasonably well-informed football watcher evoking the famous amateur club, now one half of the Corinthian-Casuals club in Tolworth. And while the amateur, football for football’s sake is similar the story of the Kentish Corinthian is rather different. You could say the whole story evokes “Field of Dreams.” Continue reading →

Committee commitments had seen be unavailable since the Forgeside game and Wednesday is seldom a good day to find a game at a ground that I haven’t previously visited, and can get to after work. But in the spirit of Wilkins Micawber, something did turn up, and in Charles Dickens’ home town too! We’ll artfully ignore the fact that Rochester actually play in Strood… Continue reading →

GLEBE 5 (Obasa 31 47 62 Jeffery 82 83)

LYDD TOWN 0

Att 57

Entry, Programme and Team Sheet £6

The great irony of the Kent Invicta League is that it’s success means it no longer exists. It was created in 2011 to provide a bridge at Step 6 between the Kent League at Step 5 and the Kent County League at Step 7. The Kent League re-badged itself as the Southern Counties East and for this season has swallowed up the Kent Invicta as it’s lower division. Nevertheless, the Kent Invicta League has left a valuable legacy, and Glebe are a good example of it. Continue reading →

More or less 2 years ago I paid a visit to Kent County League outfit APM Contrast, mainly to gaze upon their wonderfiul pitched roofed stand, a relic from the club’s former guise, Aylesford Paper Mills’ stint in the Kent League, now the Premier Division of the Southern Counties East League. What I and many others who made the journey found was club struggling with the loss of the club’s main source of support, the paper mill and the ground grading realities of regaining their lost status. FISHER FC 0

CRAY VALLEY PAPER MILLS 3 (Jeffrey 43 Gayle 88 Bremner 90)

In non-league there are all too few happy endings, so when the old Fisher Athletic lost the Surrey Quays Stadium in 2004 you wondered how long the club could last exiled 5 miles away at Dulwich Hamlet. The answer turned out to be 5 years, but their eventual demise proved to be more about financial wrongdoing than anything else. A fan owned club was quickly established to replace the old club and continued to play at Champion Hill but a return to Rotherhithe looked a distant dream. Continue reading →

I’m beginning to think that the Kentish town of Tunbridge Wells has something of an image problem. You tend to think of the place as being the epitome of a brand of blue-rinse conservatism that manifests itself in the form of an acerbic letter to the newspaper signed by “Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells.”
