If you’re going to visit all the iconic football grounds in England I’d suggest that Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough would be close to the top of just about any list. The ground dates from 1899, and post World War II became one of the country’s pre-eminent grounds. The first of 26 FA Cup semi finals here here took place in 1915.

After two organised hops in March on one level the last thing I wanted was another. But then there’s always something to learn from other folks’ events, and I was the only part of the GroundhopUK team available! There was also more to it than just a set of staggered kick-offs too, with it being the league’s “Non League Day” attraction, and a fundraiser for the “Prostate Cancer UK” charity too. But what really interested me was the advance ticketing…

For Sunday’s fixtures on the North West Counties Hop we returned to suburban Manchester and a club who in my eyes we owed a game to. Abbey Hey had been the visitors at Stafford Town, Wythenshawe Town and even featured on the very first NWCL Hop at Maine Road. That was on 2017, so no withstanding the break due to Covid, Abbey Hey were certainly due!

If the North West Counties Hop was going to New Mills then it was close to inevitable that we’d pair them with Glossop North End as the “High Peak Twins.” But with all due respect to New Mills they were never a Football League club…

Sometimes your plans have to adapt. My car was being serviced but it took longer than expected, so I had to pick somewhere a lot closer to where I was in Eastern Oxfordshire. Stood in a cold garage I manipulated Fulltime. I knew there was nothing new for me in either the North Berkshire League or the Oxon Senior League but there were a couple in the Witney & District League that represented a new tick for me. But here’s the thing; in over 3,800 games watched I then did something new. I made my choice based on who the referee was!

No matter who you support, if you’ve made it to the FA Cup 3rd round you look for a good draw don’t you? If you’re a Championship or Premier League club you look for a lower league club at home, and hopefully a straightforward route to the fourth round. If you’re from the leagues that have had to win games to get here, then you want a glamour, money-spinning tie. I’d argue that League 1 Exeter City versus Championship Oxford United added up to neither.. unless you were Robyn and I.

It is a curiosity that the Olympic Legacy Stadium may well be part of the legacy of the 2012 London Olympics, and is the only such stadium built outwith the host city, but its roots lie with a completely different Olympics.

I do question my sanity sometimes. A 4 hour trip north the morning after a New Year party, in the aftermath of the a storm affecting the North East and Scotland. In fact so daft was my idea we cruised into Whitby far earlier than we needed to be, which got me thinking…

With Robyn my wife being from Bristol, it’s fair to day I’ve seen plenty of the city and since she’s from Knowle West I’ve seen plenty of Totterdown. If you’ve ever been past Temple Meads station then headed south and climbed up the Wells Road you’ve been to Totterdown.

My wife Robyn called it correctly, “Why do groundhoppers tend to dive straight for a new ground as soon as its open? Surely you should aim for the grounds that are facing demolition?” The case of Cambridge City was one that added up to both though!
