Thamesmead is the kind of town that exists due to circumstance. It’s there to service the docks at Tilbury and other Thames dock towns, themselves only there because the Port of London docks were too small to service the huge new container ships so in the 1960’s the whole operation moved east and the town grew with the new industry. You could say that Docklands’ loss was Thamesmead’s gain, but the club in situ at Bayliss Avenue, Thamesmead isn’t the club that originally called the ground its home. The tale is a little tangled… Continue reading →

More or less 2 years ago I paid a visit to Kent County League outfit APM Contrast, mainly to gaze upon their wonderfiul pitched roofed stand, a relic from the club’s former guise, Aylesford Paper Mills’ stint in the Kent League, now the Premier Division of the Southern Counties East League. What I and many others who made the journey found was club struggling with the loss of the club’s main source of support, the paper mill and the ground grading realities of regaining their lost status. Even if the names hint at League 1 and the Eastern Counties League surely noone could mistake Otford for anything other than the Kentish town near Sevenoaks? The ground is rather intriguing, set as it is at the back of Otford Recreation Ground, but why does a club playing at the 8th level of non-league football in England have floodlights? Very much with my GroundhopUK hat on I’d love to see a hop game at an ethnic club like Gravesend’s Guru Nanak. For me the clubs I like to see on these events tend to be those who give a little local flavour to their visitors, and a Sikh club with their cuisine and culture would be as much an education as it would be a football match. As a groundhopper there are truths to be found self-evident. Amongst these are that you will see mile after mile of motorway roads, and that you will eat in barn-style chain pubs named in part after a “Dukes of Hazzard” character and they will all smell of stale beer, farts and despair.

You’ll fly past football pitches on those rivers of asphalt and you’ll glance across and wonder who plays there, and you’ll make a mental note to pay them a visit; more often than not you’ll forget. Continue reading →
