STEEPLE CLAYDON 4 (Wright 6 Davies 10 Gibbs 12 70)

WING VILLAGE 2 (D Farmer 14 84)

Att 19

There are no end of Claydons in this corner of Buckinghamshire. There’s Botolph, East, Middle and Steeple, and the great irony of watching a football match in Steeple Claydon is that you can’t actually see the steeple! But this part of the world has a more obscure claim to fame, that the London Underground used to run here. Continue reading →

STREET 3 (Murray 10 21 Hunt 22)

Even with the amount of events GroundhopUK now runs, the chance to run a hop in a completely new league is still relatively unusual. So the chance to approach the project with a blank sheet of paper was no bad thing. We have a tried and tested way of doing things for Step 5 and 6 leagues but there is always both room for improvement, and a sense of new light through old windows was a thought worth pursuing. The White Mark, Hill Road, Watlington, Oxfordshire.

About two years I paid Watlington Town FC a visit and in my sloppy way I looked up the small town’s claim to fame afterwards, missing out on a great photographic opportunity. Because Watlington’s claim to fame is the White Mark, and millions of people have passed close by without either seeing it, or learning its secret. Continue reading →

I’m really not sure why I revisited this one, after all I watched a regimental cup game here 3 years ago. It certainly wasn’t because there was a programme issued, that’s a bonus nothing more. Certainly the standard of forces football is very good, the Army FA is treated as a County FA by the Football Association, and the stadium has presence, dominated by the 1,128 capacity stand, which could easily have double the seats it features now. I suspect what drew me back there is that the place does have a different feel than my normal destinations situated as it is in Aldershot’s Military Town. Continue reading →

I wish there were more teams with lights in the Welsh League, I could enjoy mid-week fixtures here a lot more often. It takes my mind back to happy days when the Welsh Groundhop dealt in the cards of the Welsh League and the South Wales Amateur league. We tried to pronounce the likes of Ynysddu, and Blaenrhondda, and quaffed pint after pint in the Otley Arms in Trefforest. As one half of GroundhopUK, we will return to the Valleys one day, and the imminent merger of the Amateur and Senior Leagues will help that process.

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The Louvre Museum has 8.5 million visitors per year. This blog was viewed about 430,000 times in 2014. If it were an exhibit at the Louvre Museum, it would take about 18 days for that many people to see it.

As I stood in the almost deserted stand watching a game a pitch’s width away I watched two magpies stand on a crash barrier and survey the scene. Like me, they were sheltering from the torrential rain, most of the other spectators tried to keep their umbrellas from turning inside out at pitchside, but lets face it, if there’s cover its best used! Just occasionally televised football does improve attendances! With Barnet FC at their new ground, The Hive for this season, and the game kicking off late at 5.30pm for television, any club local to North London was likely to see an influx of groundhoppers. We were indebted to well-respected hopper Stephen Jackson who liaised with the club so they were prepared for the larger-than-normal attendance. I hope the club had a decent pay-out for their efforts.

The main issue was actually working out where Belstone actually is! Continue reading →

Sometimes, coincidence can be a wonderful thing. With the Northern League staging a 4-game groundhop in Newcastle the next day, any club staging a game in the area the evening before was always likely to see a glut of southern-based hoppers. 4 clubs did; in the Northern League there were games at Shildon and Spennymoor, and a few saw Middlesbrough beat Doncaster in the Championship, but for me the most intriguing was Silksworth CW.

Silksworth is a district of Sunderland, and I passed the Stadium of Light on my way to the Bobby Gurney Memorial Park. Gurney was born in Silksworth as his father worked at the local pit, now where the local leisure centre. Bobby was spotted playing for Bishop Auckland in 1925 and signed for Continue reading →

henley on thames, hotel, human psyche, Middle aged ladies, package, show, suitable train, Whinge, young people of today

With it being the close season, I thought I’d tell you a short story which I promise actually happened.

During my time living in Henley-on-Thames I got to know two middle-aged ladies. They’d married early in life, and now their children had left home, and their husbands had retired to life either on the end of a fishing rod or on the golf course.  They now had the time and the money to pursue their own interests and hobbies, and did so with relish! At times it was like watching teenagers, which of a fashion it was, after all, they were doing nothing more than what young people of today take completely for granted. They’d been denied this when they were young, and were simply making up for lost time.

On one occasion they decided to book a weekend hotel and show package in London, and took the train from Henley to Reading then on to Paddington. The trouble was that afterwards there wasn’t a suitable train home, so I got roped in to give them a lift from Marble Arch back home. On that short journey I learned a little of the human psyche.

I pulled up on Park Lane, and fortunately they were already waiting for me. After dumping their bags in the boot they clambered into my car, and I asked how the weekend went. Their responses surprised me.

“Well, the hotel wasn’t the best….”

“The breakfast was meagre…”

“The room was pokey.”

“The wine was expensive…”

“The seats (at the show) were quite a way back…”

And so it carried on all the way back to Henley, and the village just outside where one of the ladies lived. I dropped off there first as the second address was on my way home. I pulled up to the house and it was there I learned my lesson on human nature and how some people communicate.

The two ladies said goodbye, and as she got out, the first said, “Thanks for organising things …… I had a MARVELLOUS time!”

You see, some people only communicate by whingeing. The trick is to be able to pick when the whinge really is a whinge. I’ll never forget those two.
