For me half the fun of travel is the sometimes unique set of circumstances that lead you somewhere. It was leaving day after Robyn and I’s week in Penzance and such are the realities of Covid cleaning protocols, we had to be out by 9am. Normally we’d have looked for something Cornish to watch but in addition we needed to be back in Oxford for roughly 7pm. What it all added up to was us visiting a club I’d wanted to visit for 6 years, but never thought I’d visit this way. Continue reading →

It had been a highly convivial afternoon in Newry but as I thrashed the tiny hire car on the motorway back to Dublin the tension was building. On one hand any trip to any capital is going to involve traffic, and we’d made the decision already to use both of Dublin’s toll roads (costing a total of €4.70) just to get there on time. Another problem was the fact that even though we’d been in Ireland since Friday morning, we still didn’t have tickets.

It wasn’t the most straightforward of Boxing Days. I was still with the ex-wife back in 2009 and we’d finally managed to cope with parental Christmas blackmail (“If you don’t spend Christmas Day with us we won’t bother celebrating it” – How could we be in two places at once??) by booking ourselves into a log cabin in the Lake District for Christmas week. Perhaps the familial gods saw what we did – we promptly got snowed in, and I needed a tow just to get the shopping home! In the end, I ended up parking up half-a-mile from the cabin just to allow myself transport while we were there. It also had the (un) intended benefit of allowing me to go to football!

Swedish Groundhop 2020

18 Tuesday Feb 2020

Unfortunately due to the Covid-19 virus pandemic this year’s Swedish Hop has had to be postponed.

This is organiser Kim Hedwall’s email to me this morning

“According to the Covid19, Corona virus I have decided to postpone the Swedish Hop until first weekend in June 2021.

With closed borders and restriction to travel as stay indoors for older people etc. the only decision is to postpone the hop.

Already Euro 2020 among other big tournaments is postponed and situation is not ideal.

Swedish FA, have decided to start the football season in the beginning of June as earliest.

As we got a planned game in the Superettan in the hop fixtures and also not knowing what will happen to the lower leagues,

all games could be moved to other dates, my decision is to postpone the hop until first weekend in June 2021.

Really a blow for me and everyone involved, as it could have been a very good hop.

I hope everyone will understand the decision and stay away from the virus.

Country after country is closing down in protection against the corona virus, so this is the only thing to do.”

Yours sincerely

Kim

For those of you that have sent me cheques thanks, and I’ll make sure those are destroyed. I hope those who have booked flights can obtain refunds. I hope that making an early decision on this will help.

Regards

Laurence

After an 11-game blast around the Valleys over the previous weekend you’d have thought the very last thing I’d want is another game in the area! But my regular reader has probably worked out by now that I’m a contrary soul, and I’d had a rather interesting conversation at Rhydyfelin on the Monday of the hop…. Continue reading →

I suspect that the pretty Buckinghamshire village of Stewkley is more famous for cricket than football. Former England captain Alistair Cook was married at the local church here, and fast bowler Darren Gough had a playing stint at Stewkley CC whilst living here. Away from sport “Pub Landlord” Al Murray was born here, but why did an off-pyramid game at the far side of the cricket pitch attract quite so many groundhoppers? Continue reading →

This one had been pencilled in for some time, as it was my girlfriend Robyn’s team’s last home game of the season, and when the tickets were artfully discounted, the chance to explore the new Lansdowne stand too. Robyn and I had watched the reverse fixture back in November, Birmingham won 1-0 and we departed thinking that Bristol City would probably need to win the final game to guarantee safety. Little did we know… Continue reading →

At the end of the season before last many hoppers made a beeline for Fry Club as their ground was due to be demolished, with the club moving around 200 yards away. The old Somerdale was quite a ground with the “Cadbury’s” logo in the background, but as we all left we saw the new ground in progress and thought we’d seen the start of a happy ending, so I headed back expecting to find the club happily ensconced in their new ground. Of course life couldn’t be that straightforward could it? Continue reading →

There are no end of Claydons in this corner of Buckinghamshire. There’s Botolph, East, Middle and Steeple, and the great irony of watching a football match in Steeple Claydon is that you can’t actually see the steeple! But this part of the world has a more obscure claim to fame, that the London Underground used to run here. Continue reading →
