No matter who you support, if you’ve made it to the FA Cup 3rd round you look for a good draw don’t you? If you’re a Championship or Premier League club you look for a lower league club at home, and hopefully a straightforward route to the fourth round. If you’re from the leagues that have had to win games to get here, then you want a glamour, money-spinning tie. I’d argue that League 1 Exeter City versus Championship Oxford United added up to neither.. unless you were Robyn and I.

It is a curiosity that the Olympic Legacy Stadium may well be part of the legacy of the 2012 London Olympics, and is the only such stadium built outwith the host city, but its roots lie with a completely different Olympics.

I do question my sanity sometimes. A 4 hour trip north the morning after a New Year party, in the aftermath of the a storm affecting the North East and Scotland. In fact so daft was my idea we cruised into Whitby far earlier than we needed to be, which got me thinking…

With Robyn my wife being from Bristol, it’s fair to day I’ve seen plenty of the city and since she’s from Knowle West I’ve seen plenty of Totterdown. If you’ve ever been past Temple Meads station then headed south and climbed up the Wells Road you’ve been to Totterdown.

If finding a far flung game on the Friday I finish work is part of my pre-Christmas routine, then finding one closer to home on the Saturday is too. The rationale is easy, I’m part of a pub quiz team, we organise a Christmas meal out each year and since one of us requires it, we eat early.

It seems that just before Christmas there’s usually a couple of Friday night games, seemingly to tempt groundhoppers who’d finished work for the festive break. It does pay to be adaptable though, at lunchtime I’d planned on being South Wales, not South Yorkshire. Thanks to Phil Sweet of the South Wales Alliance for the early heads-up of a waterlogged pitch at Llwydcoed!

In rugby the schism of 1895 is still obvious. Back then the Northern Rugby Union broke away from the established Rugby Football Union (RFU) to allow for professionalism. In Association football the schism happened in 1907 , albeit in reverse. The clubs wanting amateurism formed the Amateur Football Association and left the Football Association rather than the other way round. I’ll never forget that wonderful quote dating from the time describing professionalism as the, “Fungus growth which had become attached to the machinery of football management!”

With Robyn my wife being from Bristol I was a little surprised I hadn’t paid Penpole Lane a visit sooner. Shirehampton’s elevation to the Western League for last season has produced the frankly amazing position where they, Avonmouth, Cribbs, Hallen and Bristol Manor Farm are all within 3 miles of Penpole Lane, and all play at Western League level or better! You’ll pass by the alleyway entrance of Avonmouth’s King George V Recreation Ground on the way to Shirehampton, the two grounds are less than a mile apart!

We built this city, we built this city on rock and roll

Starship “We built this City”

Songwriters: Dennis Lambert / Peter F. Wolf / Martin George Page / Bernard Taupin

My wife Robyn called it correctly, “Why do groundhoppers tend to dive straight for a new ground as soon as its open? Surely you should aim for the grounds that are facing demolition?” The case of Cambridge City was one that added up to both though!

You may recall that a few years ago I visited the Portsmouth suburb of Copnor for the Moneyfields Sports Ground, named after the avenue on which it was located. The trains rumbled past behind the goal past the site of a station that was never built.
