Sometimes I think that in the long term I’ll become something of a research groundhopper, and therefore this blog will end up being to publicise those little footballing gems that so far have evaded attention. And dear reader if that means I get to visit, photograph and write about places like Milkwall’s Edenwall Road, then that’s fine by me! Continue reading →

Its tempting to define the Forest of Dean as that part of Gloucestershire that’s between the rivers Wye and Severn and is south of the A40. You soon discover the fallacy of that when you head south down the A48, then turn off at Westbury and climb. The forest gradually takes over and the pace of life slows, it really is a different but beautiful part of the world, and you forget just how close you are to the Welsh border until you see mileage signs to Monmouth in single figures. So dear reader, once more to the A48 and the Forest of Dean, this time just south of Lydney. During my trips to this part of the world I’ve got used to the idea that there’s precious little between the main road and the Severn. As ever I was wrong, there’s a good mile or so of land to work with in the pretty village of Aylburton. Its the type of village built as ribbon development, the land shelves steeply upwards rapidly as soon as you leave the road as I found out as soon as I tried to park!

So more Forest of Dean action from the North Gloucestershire’s pre-season tournament. The village is easy to find, its on the A48 south from Gloucester, but the Blakeney Playing Field is rather more difficult to reach. In fact you could say its pain in the Butt to find! Continue reading →

So more West Dean League action, except this time I found myself at a southern outpost for the North Gloucestershire League. The Tidenham War Memorial Hall, is found in Tutshill, around a mile from the bridge over the Wye into Chepstow and Wales. The name “Tut” refers to the watchtower that use to guard against Welsh incursions in medieval times, but its best know now for being the birthplace of “Harry Potter” author JK Rowling. Each pre-season the clubs in the Forest of Dean in membership of the North Gloucestershire League have a cup competition instead of playing friendlies. Its separated into 3 sections, Senior, Intermediate, and Junior, on a divisional status. Its organised rather like the World Cup with a group stage followed by a knock-out phase, and I’m indebted to Gloucestershire non-league expert Tim Burgin fir supplying me with the details. Around 15 years ago, I was being given a lift to watch an Intertoto Cup game at Newtown AFC, and our driver had decided to avoid the motorways and take the scenic route, just clipping the top of the Forest of Dean. We passed a sign for Newent and he commented that the town’s club used to be in the Gloucestershire County League, but had disappeared off of his radar. I was new to groundhopping, and took a stupidly snobby attitude to the perceived quality of football on show. The simple fact was that I was in no position to judge, and when I saw this fixture on the club’s website, I felt I owed them a visit. It may have taken me far too long, but it was a good choice on my part, the football was excellent.
