With Swedish Hop organiser Kim Hedwall still visiting us, I picked a game as much for who the host club’s media officer is than anything else. GroundhopUK’s Chris Berezai is originally from Bridgend but has lived in Long Eaton for well over 20 years. And other than organising more groundhops than anyone else, he’s also media team manager at Long Eaton United. Add Dan Bishop, the self-styled Poundland Peter Ustinov into the mix- he also is doing his “92” by rejection letter- he applies for every manager’s job going, and you have possibly the club least likely to ditch the printed programme!

Sat on the coach heading from West Calder to Bathgate I checked social media and was a little surprised. I knew we’d lose a few hoppers for the middle two games, despite our normal attempts to minimise this form of drift. I spotted a few (and I do mean a few) hoppers had opted to miss West Calder and Bathgate in favour of one SPFL game. I allowed myself a raised eyebrow but no more.

Part of me wished we were in Wales, it was St David’s Day after all, and GroundhopUK owner Chris Berezai is Welsh after all. But it wasn’t Chris that was given daffodils over breakfast in Bolton, no that was Robyn my wife! She’s from Bristol and the joke started when she visited Tirana and our friend Ditmar commented, “Bristol, isn’t that nearly in Wales?” That was 2 years ago and the joke has well and truly stuck..

GroundhopUK’s trip to Nyetimber Lane was a well over a year in the planning. It was their game that was lost to Storm Babet during last year’s hop, to the extent that it was wasn’t so much waterlogged off, more flooded to the extent that I’m not sure we could have got to the ground, much less see a game!

Over the years Vickers Crayford Dartford has been good to me. I’d first seen them play around 25 years ago when they were groundsharing at a dilapidated Harrow Meadow, the Eltham-based home of the now defunct Greenwich Borough. Borough and Harrow Meadow was where Ian Wright first played his football, the club giving him a chance when others wouldn’t.

The final two games of our Saturday in the West Wales Premier League saw us in Swansea and its environs. The first was a trip to Penlan, by reputation the roughest estate in the area. You may find this surprising but I was far less concerned than one or two others.

I must say I enjoyed my close season far more than I expected, the chance to recharge my groundhopping batteries was appreciated, even the pre-season friendlies were often an exercise in enjoying a day out, rather than with any kind of aim. Robyn and I were ready to return to GroundhopUK duty for the UCL Hop but then we hit a snag….

Ridin’ on the highway,

Goin’ to a show
Stop in all the byways
Playin’ rock ‘n’ roll…

I tell you, folks
It’s harder than it looks

Bon Scott 1975

The coach had already been on the road for over 4 hours before it reached Robyn and I in Lewknor. From Cardiff to Perth via London isn’t most folks’ idea of normal, but I don’t think there’s too many folks who think us hoppers are entirely sane…

I felt under certain amount of pressure for this hop. Part of it was the loss of the two Blackpool games on the North West Counties Hop, we really didn’t want to lose a game on each of the last three hops. But much more than that, was where were heading.

I’m sure my regular reader is aware of how my version of groundhoppers’ O.C.D. shows itself, I tend to make a beeline for clubs I regularly see on road signs. Well, that must go double for a motorway service station mustn’t it? Clearly, I’m not the only one who’s thought that, as virtually the first thing I saw as I walked into Mossie Park was a banner with the legend,” Charnock Richard, more than a service station!”

Quite right, and I hope the hop visit helped in that way. Certainly the club’s hosting helped!
