Albatros, Anglian Combination, Bungay Town, Football, Norfolk, Wells, Wells Harbour Railway, Wells next the sea, Wells Town

With the football season over prematurely due to the Coronavirus Pandemic I’m in the unusual position of actually having this blog up to date! So to keep the content coming, and for something to do, I’ll do some old grounds and games where there’s a story to tell.

Saturday 4th April 2009 ko 15.00

Anglian Combination – Division One

WELLS TOWN 1 (Harrison 23)

East sent off 90 (2nd booking)

BUNGAY TOWN 1 (McFarlane 3)

Att 30

Free Entry

Programme £1

The curiosity of Wells-next-the-sea is that it isn’t! The small town on the North Norfolk coast is roughly a mile from the sea due to land reclamation works by the Holkeham Estate in 1859. To this day the “Albatros” an 18th Dutch century schooner lies in permanent dry dock  in the old harbour and was in use as a pub; you can see its masts in some of my photos. But other than the obvious, why was I there? Continue reading →

BUNGAY TOWN 1 (Whiteman 7)

Att c200

Entry & Programme £2

If you’re on Twitter and like football then I suspect you follow Shaun Cole and Bungay Town. Yes, even you at the back, the Manchester United fan that’s never actually been to Old Trafford, because Shaun sells his club like no other. They are the team that once offered everyone 5p to attend a game then the next year offered free mushrooms to patrons. Because just because your club exists 12 promotions from the Premier League doesn’t mean you can’t tell the world that you’re alive and kicking, and it does give you the freedom to do it with wit and charm. Anglian Combination Division Two

HOVETON WHERRYMEN 1 (King 67p)

BUNGAY TOWN 2 (Flint 43 Andrews 52)

Att 19

Nothing for sale

In the Norfolk Broads, the village of Hoveton has reason to feel downtrodden. On the south side of the River Bure is Wroxham, and you cross the narrow swing-bridge to get to Hoveton. You cross to by far the larger settlement, but what did they call the railway station built on the Hoveton side? That’s right, Wroxham with the suffix, “and Hoveton,” was only added in 1966. To add insult to injury the narrow gauge Bure Valley Railway terminates at a station a hundred-or-so yards from the main station. What’s that station called? That’s right…Wroxham!

Once a year Football has, ” Non League Day,” when an international weekend means there’s no Premier League and Championship games scheduled. Fans are encouraged to support grass roots football, and the smaller clubs try their best to entice new supporters to come and visit them. Last year, I ended up at an iconic ground, Northern League Crook Town http://wp.me/p1PehW-1dV, but this year I wanted a fresh approach, so I decided to pick the club with what I thought was the best marketing gimmick. And Bungay won that battle by an absolute mile. Continue reading →
