You may recall the Stockwood treble, the triumvirate of Bristol Telephones, Stockwood Wanderers and Cutters Friday whose grounds lie in a triangle on Stockwood Lane in the southern suburbs of Bristol. But there is another Stockwood club, Stockwood Green so how do they fit into the scheme of things?

With Robyn my wife being from Bristol, it’s fair to day I’ve seen plenty of the city and since she’s from Knowle West I’ve seen plenty of Totterdown. If you’ve ever been past Temple Meads station then headed south and climbed up the Wells Road you’ve been to Totterdown.

With Robyn my wife being from Bristol I was a little surprised I hadn’t paid Penpole Lane a visit sooner. Shirehampton’s elevation to the Western League for last season has produced the frankly amazing position where they, Avonmouth, Cribbs, Hallen and Bristol Manor Farm are all within 3 miles of Penpole Lane, and all play at Western League level or better! You’ll pass by the alleyway entrance of Avonmouth’s King George V Recreation Ground on the way to Shirehampton, the two grounds are less than a mile apart!

You’ve probably spotted the running theme. With family in Bristol, I tend to tick off another ground in the area whenever I’m visiting. And that is how I became interested in what you could call the Stockwood treble. It evokes the now impossible Lenton Lane treble, in Nottingham of Bilborough Pelican, Dunkirk and Greenwood Meadows. Sadly, both Meadows and Pelican are defunct, but there’s now the Stockwood treble for groundhoppers to attack.

It is strange how things work out. I’m well used to regular trips to see family in Bristol and using that as a springboard to visit grounds either in the area, the South West or in South Wales. Half the reason I was there was my wife Robyn and I knew that with the Southern Combination Hop coming up our opportunties to see family would be limited once again. But I did spot something that made me smile!

I’d been foisted by my own petard. As my regular reader knows my wife Robyn is from Knowle West in Bristol’s southern suburbs so I do tend to see quite a lot of the area visiting family. On such as visit I’m mused that I must have visited every single ground in the city with a set of floodlights? Our nephew Jack immediately commented, “Have you seen a game at Imperial then?” No, I hadn’t…..

Programme -officially none, but the fans are producing an unofficial programme “Cider Reds” for £4 available from underneath the Atyeo statue. It’s rather good!

Robyn and I have been together 7 and a half years, and married for 3 and a half, so the only real surprise is that it took this long for our two sides to meet. I’ve been an Oxford United season ticket holder since the mid-80’s and Robyn was a season ticket holder at Bristol City when we met. And let’s face it, her name is Robyn!

There are a couple of caveats, the women’s teams have met twice in that time, in 2016 and again last season. The male teams did also meet in a behind closed doors friendly a few weeks ago- I imagine both clubs played that game with more than half an eye on this game!

It does pay to keep an eye on the Gloucestershire County League. I tend to see it as a quasi-Step 6 league, the mandatory programme rule, and the reasonably stringent ground gradings to make for an experience unlike most at the level. It was though, an odd evening to be in Bristol.

On one hand Bristol City were at home to Manchester City that night in the FA Cup, but that only meant that the southern half of the city would be having cup fever. Stoke Gifford is in the northern suburbs, and well and truly in Bristol Rovers territory, so I expected and got studied indifference to the goings on at Ashton Gate. Continue reading →

One of the great advantages of having family in Bristol is the extra centre of gravity it gives my groundhopping. You’d expect me to have done a lot in around my hometown of Oxford, but 7 years of Robyn and I means regular visits west, and very slowly I’m uncovering some real Bristolian gems.  Continue reading →

Back in the day the test of the committed hopper was the completion of the Lenton Lane treble. The rather unprepossessing road in Nottingham is less than half a mile long but nevertheless used to sport the grounds used by Bilborough Pelican , Dunkirk and Greenwood Meadows. Unless you were on the 2004 Central Midlands League Hop that featured all three, doing the Lenton Lane Treble did take a certain amount of commitment! Continue reading →
