We headed to Horsham’s environs for our second game of the day, and by tradition it seems, one from the County League’s bottom division. Southwater is known locally for its country park but it is also home to Southwater Royals FC who play in the West Sussex league and Southwater FC who’ve played in the Southern Combination since 2021.

Two weeks earlier the game had been abandoned, due to a serious injury to Stapleford defender Mitchell Robinson, but I happened to be working in Nottingham on the day of this re-arranged tie. In so many ways a visit to Barnett’s Field left like tidying up loose ends. You may recall I’d visited this corner of Dorset to visit Sturminster Newton’s former home, the War Memorial Recreation Park 10 years ago. That was to see a game in the now sadly defunct Blackmore Vale Sunday League, and in the days when I was a fairly regular visitor here, that league never failed to provide me with interesting games to go and see.

It did feel that we were heading to the league’s northern outposts. I remember being slightly miffed that I’d missed out on missing Skegness’s former ground Burgh Road. The club moved to Wainfleet Road in 2017 and the reason I’d missed out was simple, time and distance. If ever there was a reason for an organised groundhop this was it.

Any student of the non league game will tell you there’s something of a love/hate relationship between Stourbridge FC and their home at War Memorial Athletic Ground. On one hand, it is an icon of the West Midlands sporting scene, but since it is also a cricket ground the start and end of any football season is always an issue; I remember them playing early rounds of the FA Cup at Halesowen around 20 years ago.

It seemed unusual to not be packing our suitcases. The Swedish Hop was ending, but Robyn, Adrian and I had booked an extra night in Hammarby Sjöstad before travelling to Tallinn on the overnight ferry on Monday evening. It allowed us the most precious of commodities, time and we managed to make full use of it, but not as a few folks expected!

Saturday morning dawned as what this Englishman calls the Full Swedish breakfast was in order at our hotel in Hammarby Sjöstad in Stockholm’s southern suburbs. I’m not saying its for everyone, but the scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, meatballs and chicken sausages were lovely, and if you’re feeling adventurous, you could try a side of pickled herrings on crispbread. I did every time, but then Sweden and I do get along…

It was Thursday evening, and I was airside at Heathrow Terminal 2. Robyn was contemplating how far it was to our gate (SAS, so 200 metres only) and Adrian was complating whether he had time for another beer (as always- yes). As for me I was contemplating the series of occurences that had got us to there for a flight to Stockholm’s Arlanda Airport.
