If the West Lancs Hop was an introduction, then the West Wales was a farewell- at least for now. There was nothing sinster about that fact, the problem was that we’d run out of clubs to visit!

To a groundhopper, one benefit of pre-season is that clubs who groundshare during the regular season tend to play “at home”. You may recall me visiting Benfleet well before they got Woodside up to Step 6 standards and you hope Rayleigh can do the same for their London Road home.

So back on GroundhopUK duty and despite this being, I believe, the only hop game ever to have taken place in February I was comfortable with what we were doing, and although noone mentioned it, the weather forecast looked kind.

On reflection there aren’t many worse places to be jaded at than in the middle of a traffic jam on the M25 on a Friday night. I knew why I was; we’d come off the back of a Kent Hop 3 weeks earlier that had seen catering that with the exception of Sutton Athletic had failed to inspire. I’d spent most of that weekend metaphorically swerving burgers! Then there was the Sussex Hop to consider; I’d worried that at GroundhopUK we were promoting two hops in October at both a similar level, and part of the UK.

On occasion I’ve opined that I don’t pick my games they pick me; this was a classic example. After the glut of games that was the Kent Hop all I knew was that the last thing I wanted to watch was something English and at Steps 5 or 6. So when Rogerstone tweeted that they were opening their new ground, my mind was charmingly made up for me!

We’d flown in to Rimini-San Marino airport the previous Wednesday evening and together with the other passengers on the flight were faced with something unusual. There was absolutely no onward transport, the buses had finished for the day, and there wasn’t a taxi to be seen. I found the number of a local taxi firm and eventually a stream of cabs arrived to take the flight to various hotels in the Rimini, Riccione, and Cattolica area. We finally got to our hotel, dumped our bags and had just enough time in the end to grab a Piadina, it’s a good job restaurants in Italy tend to close late!

When Redditch Borough won last season’s Midland League Division Two and successfully applied for Step 6 status, I wonder whether they imagined that would mean membership of the Hellenic League. There can’t be too many clubs as north as this or further that have played in the Hellenic or are there?

If the point of groundhopping is to visit as many football grounds as possible, then if you’re going to revisit anywhere then let it be somewhere that has changed beyond recognition. While my first visit to Kilsby Lane was back in 2011 when Rugby Borough were Rugby Town Juniors. As an aside it was also the second article I wrote for this site. How times change.. the pitch was grass back then!

It had only been 2 years since I’d visited The Rail and if I watched non league football purely to tick off grounds, this would have been the game I’d have anticipated the least. Yet, for me this was the visit I looked forward to the most…..

The club do sporadically issue programmes.

Once again it was a question of finding something to pair up with a North Berkshire cup final, and once again the Thames Valley Premier supplied the goods- this was the first part of a double-header with YMCA’s reserves to follow. There was only one small catch though.
