From CMB it was both unusual and gratifying to see so many people walk the quarter-of-a-mile through Lostock to Tempest United. The is named after the road the ground is in but with there being little or no parking at The Famous Shed, it solved what could have been an logistical nightmare. That said we did walk past a pub on the way; it was closed and would undoubtedly done a roaring trade if they’d have known who was walking past. Still, their loss was the football club’s gain…

A lot changed between Skegness and Louth, and I’m all too aware that Louth Town play in Saltfordby, around 7 miles from Louth! The crucial change was the league we were watching, with us close to complete for the United Counties League (of those clubs who want to host) we’ll be switching the opening weekend event next year to the Northern Counties East.

There is a quirk, the league is one of very few that still uses the Mitoo website fixtures but it is reliable, so Robyn and I used a Middlesex game to bookend what had been a fairly brutal April for football.

I’m not sure why, but I didn’t expect much from Launceston Town. Even their programme suggested there were better grounds on the Easter Hop than Pennygillam. After the Benfleet game it seemed that the hordes scattered to the four winds. There were no end of options for the middle game of the three on the Essex Senior League’s Non League Day event, albeit those of us with the passports were limited to clubs within the league. For me I had two options that would represent a new ground, Little Oakley or Athletic Newham and it was fairly obvious which one I favoured.

After what I regarded as the maddest of mad Marchs I needed a break. I’d made the decision to watch no more than the odd midweek game, but to lean more towards seeing the end of Oxford United’s season and helping with the North Berkshire League’s cup finals. But then 4 of us fancied watching United’s away game at Burton Albion.

Unfortunately, we managed only to get on to the motorway before the gearbox gave way. I managed do no more than to limp the car to safety, and we ended up listening to the game on the radio of the low loader taking the car and we the passengers back to Oxford. After doing just over the distance to the moon in 4 years, the car had finally died, and I ended up having to wait 3 weeks for its replacement to be ready.

It wasn’t just the final day of the Peninsula League Hop. It was also the final day of 6 weeks’ worth of organised groundhopping events that had started at FC St Helens in the North West Counties League, meandered round the northern reaches of the East of Scotland League two weeks later, and the start of the end of it saw us dipping into Cornwall!
