With my presence requested at the North Berkshire League Cup Final at Milton United later, my choice of afternoon games was rather limited. But serendipity can be wonderful thing, as I received word from Berinsfield assistant manager Nathan Frost that this game was going to be a shoot-out for the title. Yes I’d visited the ground as part of the Hellenic Hop in 2005 but this game had the potential to be a cracker. But great games on paper seldom turn to be classics do they? Continue reading →

One welcome change for this season is that the Coventry Alliance now have a web presence! The league, a feeder to the Midland League was path less trodden for many hoppers as the only way you could find out fixtures other than locally was via the Football Traveller and that couldn’t help with those pesky late postponements! Other than being the town where shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer Ed Balls was brought up, the pretty Nottinghamshire town is also where the British Geological Survey is based. I’m not sure whether their seismographs recorded the best part of 400 groundhoppers heading for the local football team, but Platt Lane was certainly busy! Even a Panda Car crawled along taking a disbelieving look at proceedings; I wish the club has tried to sell those inside a programme!

The ground is perfect for an ambitious county league team, with its spacious clubhouse, railed off pitch and recently installed floodlights. Should the club be successful and want promotion, there is certainly the potential here to build an impressive ground.

Ceredigion League, groundhopping, Honda FC, J-League, Japan, JFL, Kanazawa, Katakana, Press Pass, Zweigen, Zweigen Kanazawa

A few days ago I was asked to write a piece for the United Counties League Facebook page. Given that we’re organising a groundhop for them in August I thought I’m delve a little into groundhopping culture. I  occasionally get asked what’s the most far-flung and unusual ground I’ve ever visited and I’ve got a good tale to tell on that… This isn’t my usual offering but I hope you enjoy it.

We took the groundhop to West Wales a few weeks ago, for 5 games in the Ceredigion League. We at GroundhopUK were really happy with how it went, attendances were 20% up on 2013, and the clubs did a marvellous job, making a tidy sum on varied catering, and newsy, interesting programmes.

But I’m not going to talk about that, you’ll all see how that’s done thing coming August, this is a tale from one of my more far-flung travels.

The first game on Sunday was at Bargod Rangers, in the pretty village of Drefach Velindre, near Newcastle Emlyn, and I got volunteered to speak to the local press. The cub reporter asked me what my most bizarre ground visited is, and I told them it was Zweigen Kanazawa in the Japanese 3rd Division.

It has to be said that an 11am kick-off on a Sunday is positively gentle! After the metro ride to Népliget and number 1 tram to MTK, Andy and I headed south-east on the number 37 tram to district 10, or Kőbánya.

Kőbánya, or Quarry if literally translated, started its existence as a centre for limestone mining and many of the beautiful buildings to be seen in the capital are built from materials extracted here. Later the area became known for its claypits, the clay being good for bricks, and later still for winemaking. During the Communist era brewing started up in Kőbánya and the Kőbányai Világos, a light beer became extremely popular throughout Hungary. Continue reading →

Nothing for sale

Sometimes I can sit there with a copy of the Football Traveller and there isn’t a fixture that grabs me. Its daft, a weekly magazine with around a thousand fixtures in, a case perhaps of Bruce Springsteen’s “57 channels and nothing on..”  In the end Newhall United secretary Dan Bishop suggested this one, after I asked for something low level. Dan never, ever lets you down….. Continue reading →

Kilbirnie is a small town of around 7,000 inhabitants situated in North Ayrshire around 20 miles south-west of Glasgow. The area was built up around the flax and weaving industries before iron and steelmaking took over in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Glengarnock Steel Works opened its blast furnaces around 1841 which caused a massive influx of people seeking work. Initially these works were owned by Merry & Cunninghame before being taken over by David Colville & Sons and eventually were Continue reading →
