Whatever happened prior to our trip to Gillingham I just wanted to GroundhopUK’s stint with the Southern Counties East to end well. We’d enjoyed the morning with Hythe Town, and as the coach pulled into the Star Meadow Social Club I fully expected to find the place looking similar to what I’d seen roughly 10 years earlier. Sometimes it’s what, sometimes its where, but in the case of Harthill Royal is was definately a case of both! The small town of Harthill lies close to Whitburn and like there, owes much of its existance to coal mining – in this case the Polkemmet Colliery. Back in the day Gibbshill Park was known as Beechbank Park and was home to Polkemmet Juniors. When the mine closed in 1984 the football club lasted only another 4 years.

It seemed a lot less than 3 years since I watched Hartpury University midway through their demolition of the Herefordshire League despite the club being based in Gloucestershire! It seemed to me even then the only limiting factor on the club was the pitch near the entrance to the sports facilties they were using. It was certainly good enough for the league they were in, barely for the lower division of the Hellenic, but the Premier? Not a chance?

It was an odd experience driving here. Existing the M40 at Junction 1 then picking through the edges of suburban London, where the capital collides with the Slough area. So much so I was glad my new car is ULEZ compliant, even now I’m not completely sure whether I tripped one of TfL’s cameras! If I’d have been driving my old car, I’d have had to pay, just to avoid the risk of an unwitting fine!

I’d visited Rovers old ground Hamlet Croft back in 2007, they moved to the New Croft in 2010, and somehow I contrived to fail to visit the new ground.
