Entry £7

Programme £2

Sat on the coach heading from West Calder to Bathgate I checked social media and was a little surprised. I knew we’d lose a few hoppers for the middle two games, despite our normal attempts to minimise this form of drift. I spotted a few (and I do mean a few) hoppers had opted to miss West Calder and Bathgate in favour of one SPFL game. I allowed myself a raised eyebrow but no more.

Sometimes it’s not so much the where, it’s the what. The Army FA is affiliated to the FA in much the same way as any County FA is, but let’s face it, who wouldn’t want to see a team called the Royal Artillery play? I’m sure you’re well ahead of me with the shooting one-liners!

If finding a far flung game on the Friday I finish work is part of my pre-Christmas routine, then finding one closer to home on the Saturday is too. The rationale is easy, I’m part of a pub quiz team, we organise a Christmas meal out each year and since one of us requires it, we eat early.

Being married to a Bristol girl you’d have thought I’d have finished the Gloucestershire County League years ago, and if they’d hadn’t turned down an approach from GroundhopUK around 20 years ago I’d have completed it well before Robyn and I had ever met. Perhaps it’s a sign of the strength of the league that they’re managed to remove the reserve sides (who kyboshed the groundhop plan) and keep up the refreshing of its membership over the years.

As the coach left Wembley after Oxford United’s play-off final win, I took a deep breath. It was less a feeling of celebration, that was yet to come back at the pub, more a feeling of “Now what?” I hadn’t expected promotion, but when it happened I began to look at the consequences.

What I love about my footballing life is that its hard to pigeonhole. Take the end of the season, I was variously at Wembley Stadium, a small town in Sweden and an FA Ground that hitherto I didn’t know existed!

The Swedish Hop’s cost of £320 included bed and breakfast for two nights, all transport in Sweden, together with entry fees for all games, and a goodie bag!

From our close-to unplanned trip to northern Stockholm we picked our way back through the capital’s tunnels towards Kim Hedwall’s planned base for the hop, Nacka and Saltsjöbaden- we even passed within sight of our hotel in Hammarby Sjöstad along the way. You could see Kim’s motivation, the area is idyllic, so he knew he’d be showing off his country in the best possible light.

Robyn, Adrian and I were at passport control at Arlanda Airport, noticably more complicated since Brexit. Swedish border guards are unfailingly polite, but their questions are always searching, with the inevitable purpose of our stay invariably the first. Adrian handed the guard a list of the games we’d lined up. I knew the schedule had changed, but guessed the guard wouldn’t check, and he passed after she checked he wasn’t actually a fan of any of the clubs involved! As for Robyn and I we gave our reason to be there, as seeing friends and tourism. When I admitted this was my 18th visit, she half asked, half-laughed, “Have you anything left to visit??” A fair point, but the answer was yes, as dear reader you will soon see!

I’ll always feel that Bampton is the one that to some extent, got away. If like most you use the A420 to get here you’ll see just how this part of what is now West Oxfordshire forms the border between the North Berkshire League and the Witney & District League. As in to demonstrate the point, I drove past Kingston Bagpuise, of the North Berks, and the old Bampton Town transfered out of the North Berks in 2011.

Robyn and I spent the entire journey from Wick to Billingshurst fully expecting a phone call to confirm that the game was off. While the rain had relented for the time being the deluge that had cause the abandonment at Wick, must have had the same impact at Billingshurst hadn’t it?
