The final game of the day saw the West Wales Hop do something I didn’t think we’d ever do, and that is head back to the Carmarthenshire League. We’d used the league are a replacement for the the hugely successful Ceredigion Hops, but our time with them was nowhere near as succcessful, not least because we had real issues getting clubs to be away teams. It all culminated in the 2018 Hop that contained Swansea City’s youth team, the Bridgend Sunday League and a trip to Butetown in Cardiff but absolutely no games in Carmarthenshire.

On that basis I was pleased that we could get two teams willing to play early on a Saturday evening and in Burry Port I did feel I had a personal connection!

It was as simple as to say as this. As many of you know my wife Robyn and her family are from Bristol but her sister Kelly did spend some time living in Burry Port and our nephew Che was born there. That fact does cause chaos whenever England play Wales at just about anything!

If the previous game saw Clydach struggle to square the circle of making an open park work for them, then two divisions lower Burry Port, had no such issues. It helped that Parc Tywyn is enclosed and all the essentials of life are there. It was as easy to say as it was lovely to sit back and watch a friendly club be excellent hosts- I made regular visits to the food bar, as did many others. I trust the event did Burry Port plenty of good!

The name Tywyn should nudge those with longer memories, the Welsh name for Burry Port is Porth Tywym and Porth Tywyn Suburbs played Welsh League football here twenty years ago. We caught them just prior to their demise on the 2016 Carmarthen Hop at Llandovery.

This game could easily have been one of those rarieties- an entertaining nil-nil draw. There were no lack of chances, but the dismissal of home keeper Nathan Brown gave Kidwelly the impetus they needed for two late goals that looked rather harsh on Burry Port.

We’d had an excellent day’s hopping, but I was more than aware that Sunday would bring it’s own challenges.
