It may surprise you dear reader, but Oxford’s appearance at Wembley completely took me by surprise. Just before Easter I’d been on a stadium tour at Exeter City and Martin the tour guide mentioned that our two clubs would play each other there in the final game of the league season. At that point I couldn’t see that anything would be riding on it.

I tend to have two pieces of advice on the odd occasion I get for groundhopping tips. One is to go “weird” early and the other is to never rule anything out until you’ve tried it. Of course the fact that I’m now at a point where finding a floodlit tick within a 2 hour drive from Oxford midweek does tend to force creativity on you! Continue reading →

When you think about it Wembley FC and their home at Vale Farm is the perfect place for a spectator to follow the world’s best cup competition from its start. You can of course see the competition’s final destination in the background, but when it was all over I did wonder whether the national stadium’s presence serves to madden rather than inspire? I’m old enough to remember the FA Cup when it took over all of the television on whatever Saturday it fell. You could watch “Cup Final Multi-Coloured Swap Shop” if you so desired, such was the importance attached to the final game of the season. Then after lunch I’d sit with Dad and watch the game, preceeded by the marching band, and the singing of “Abide with me,” and it goes without saying that from the moment I first set eyes on the spectacle I wanted to go to a final. There were a few problems with my idea though….

A trip to Wembley is an experience to be savoured isn’t it? It ought to be the pinnacle of your club’s ambition, and an experience where you take in every moment as if it were your last. So why did I come very close to not going, or even watching it on television? Continue reading →

I’m fortunate in that I get to visit Wembley reasonably frequently. It fulfills both sides of my divergent footballing personality. On one hand I’m a traditionalist, for me Wembley is English football’s spiritual home, so when the stadium was rebuilt in situ it was the correct decision. I admit it may well have been entirely logical to build the national stadium in Birmingham, but….. Wembley, is… home isn’t it? Continue reading →

I do enjoy my annual trip to the Vase final, even though on this occasion I found myself photographing the same people I did a few years ago! There’s something touching about the trip to the hospitality seats and seeing all those officials from Step 5 leagues. These people aren’t the career administrators from the higher echelons, these are the people who do it for the love of it, and I do wonder whether when the event will switch to a joint Trophy and Vase day that flavour will be lost in a sea of professionalism? It’s a fact of my footballing life that I don’t watch nearly enough women’s football. My cause in that respect was aided when a league I work with offered two Club Wembley seats, and I pondered how to get to the national stadium with the Jubilee, and Metropolitan tube lines closed for planned engineering work.

So, a third visit to the Vase final in three years, for last year’s final click here, and the method is more or less set in stone. You park at Hillingdon Tube station for £2, then buy a six-zone travelcard for £8.90 for the Metropolitan Line trip to Wembley Park. I could park at Bicester North and take the train to Wembley Stadium, but that’s £22, or drive but it’s £30 (£15 for Blue Badge holders) to park at Wembley. I’ve yet to find a cheaper way of doing it, and yes I did try an unofficial car park for a rock concert here once. I  drove home with no driver’s window or sat nav! Yes, Wembley is an expensive place to visit, and I get the feeling that’s part of the reason why the stadium has been close to empty each of the 8 Vase Finals held at the rebuilt stadium. DEEPING RANGERS 0

LEEK TOWN 2 (Haddrell 14 Gibson 77)

Att 225

Entry £5

I’d had problems finding something that appealed, so I went where 2 other hoppers were, and met Chris and Davy at Outgang Road. The United Counties League outfit always do well in their league, and you do wonder why they’ve never played at a higher level, the ground is easily up to scratch with its two Wembley turnstiles!

Incidentally Chris does his own excellent blog, “Damage in the Box,” so I’ll do the decent thing.

http://agroundhoppersdiary.blogspot.com

With Leek having struggled in recent years, and now find themselves at a level only one notch higher than their hosts, the Northern Premier League Division One South, you wondered whether there would be an upset.

Sadly for the neutral it wasn’t to be, as a goalkeeping howler gave Matt Haddrell a tap in for Leek’s first, and Danny Roberts in the visitors’ goal had an inspired afternoon producing brilliant saves to keep out former Lincoln City forward Tony Battersby. Inevitably we got the goal on the breal to double the lead, Australian midfielder Devon Gibson finishing well from the right, but at no stage did I fee that Deeping had it within themselves to win this tie. They seemed very one paced in the heat.

One wonders how disappointed Deeping were at losing, there is no shame is a defeat against higher opposition, but I felt Leek were there for the taking with a little more belief. I left, having enjoyed a ground that’s well worth the effort in visiting, but I’m not sure whether we’ll see Market Deeping’s team in a higher league soon, despite the ground’s clear advantages.
