Consider if you will the lot of the groundhop organiser. You’ve got plenty (believe me!) to worry about but one major issue is the middle game of just about any day. You know that there will be no end of competition for the groundhoppers’ attention at 3pm or thereabouts. Here the organiser Phil Hiscox had a real dilemma.

In my eyes at least, I’m slowing down. Part of it is that it’s now almost impossible to find a floodlit game at a new ground midweek, and part its due to a general feeling of not being in any great rush. I see some groundhoppers clocking up the grounds at a rate of over one a day, and while each to their own, I know it’s not for me; I have other interests.

Robyn and I were at a loose end. With the Welsh hop and its replacement in the Central Midlands Alliance cancelled we were in the unusual position of having August Bank Holiday sat at home in Oxford. So when the pieces didn’t fall into place, I simply dipped into that imaginary pot of grounds I wanted to visit.

Back in 2010 I was at Wembley for the Conference Premier Play-off final to watch Oxford United regain their place in the Football League at the expense of York City. As an Oxford fan my sole thought at the time was that my side won, I must confess I thought little of York and their fans, save for a brief pang of regret for their then manager Martin Foyle, he was ex-Oxford after all! A glance at the Leagues would point to there being 3 divisions between 2 University clubs who’ve both left iconic grounds, and had lousy owners. But that’s only a superficial way of looking at York’s new ground. Continue reading →

I think you’d have to have a footballing heart of stone not to have a soft spot for the Brakes. This is the club who lost their old Windmill ground in April 1988 to a property developer and didn’t kick a football in anger for 12 and a half years. A group of fans continued to meet at the Windmill pub close to the site of the old ground and continued to pay the Birmingham FA the fees each year to keep Leamington’s registration going and the name alive. I have a theory that if Arnold Bennett were writing about the Potteries in the 21st century, he’d have written about the local speedway team rather than the twin football teams of Stoke City and Port Vale. That’s not to disparage those clubs in any way, 99% of the time this blog is about visiting football grounds, but there’s something about Loomer Road in Newcastle-under-Lyme that evokes Bennett.

There can’t be many clubs who play their final game under one name at Wembley. That distinction goes to AFC Fylde who won the 2008 FA Vase as Kirkham & Wesham, then changed their name for their next season, elevated to the Northern Premier League. It doesn’t take much imagination to work out why either. Continue reading →
