If ever there was a game I felt I ought to be at this was it. Burghclere are a club I have a lot of time for, not least as they were wonderful hosts on this year’s North Berkshire League Hop and as a proud committeeman I felt I should be there to support one of our own. You see, other than being the only NBFL club in Hampshire, and so the only club in our league in the competition there was another quirk of the draw. Continue reading →

The difficulty in planning any football in Spain is that the fixtures aren’t fixed until less than a week beforehand. If it’s league fixture, then you can predict with a reasonable degree of certainty that the game will take place on a given weekend, but that could be any time between Friday and Monday, although the part-time Segunda B, and Tercera divisions are far more likely to play on Saturdays and Sundays. Andy and I found a street café on Sliema waterfront and contemplated life overlooking the azure bay with its views of Valletta. Life wasn’t bad, we’d got a free upgrade at our new hotel, the view from the balcony was spectacular, and there wasn’t a nervous pensioner in sight! Behind us the ferry over to Valletta chugged happily for a mere €1.50 each way.

It was soon time to catch the bus around the coast to Pembroke, Malta’s newest town. It, and adjoining Sweiqi are the most affluent part of the Island. The town is named after Robert Henry Herbert,  the 12th Earl of Pembroke and British Secretary at War in 1859. Continue reading →
