Consider if you will the lot of the groundhop organiser. You’ve got plenty (believe me!) to worry about but one major issue is the middle game of just about any day. You know that there will be no end of competition for the groundhoppers’ attention at 3pm or thereabouts. Here the organiser Phil Hiscox had a real dilemma.

As an Oxford United fan I’m all too aware that when we play Wycombe Wanderers it gets seen as some kind of local derby. I can understand why, the closest EFL ground to Grenoble Road is Adams Park. But to Oxford United fans the derby is with sw!ndon town, with any other team it’s a rivalry.

It may surprise you dear reader, but Oxford’s appearance at Wembley completely took me by surprise. Just before Easter I’d been on a stadium tour at Exeter City and Martin the tour guide mentioned that our two clubs would play each other there in the final game of the league season. At that point I couldn’t see that anything would be riding on it.

I’d argue that the roots of my groundhopping lie with watching Oxford United away games, so Robyn wanting to visit Carlisle as part of completing her “92” felt like me visiting part of my past. Back in the day there were four of us who used to travel together, 3 of us sharing driving duties. There was Darrell, Russell and Michelle, who quickly became “Raz, Daz and Maz” in the eyes of my ex-wife who probably saw them as a neat way of removing me from the house.

These Robyn revisits are proving to be interesting. It had been the best part of two decades since I’d visited Oakwell and back then I’d taken the Oxford United supporters’ coach straight in and out. This time out I hankered after finding more about the South Yorkshire town than just the football. And yes, I have been to Athersley Recreation!

My regular reader will have long since worked out that I’m not target driven, I don’t set out each season to complete a division, or league or tier of the game, it isn’t what makes me tick. I’m more the kind of bloke that will look through a set of fixtures and something will take my fancy. Being a contrary soul though, there is an exception to that rule and that’s the 92. Roughly 75 years ago the “New Towns Act” saw Stevenage built, with chief architect Lewis Siskin originally envisaging it as a “gay and bright” place. His utopian idea was see the neighbourly “spirit of the slums” combined with easy access to the countryside, sports and leisure facilities in a self-contained community. Back in the early 1990’s I studied places like this at University and even then there was a slightly snobby attitude to the New Towns. Thirty years later I watch the little “Starship” robots run on the dedicated cycle routes in Milton Keynes delivering people’s groceries and wonder whether Siskin was in fact just ahead of his time. On one hand you could see this as a means to an end. I needed to tick off AFC Wimbledon’s new ground for my 91st of the current EFL/Premier League grounds, and Robyn for a few less than that. Completionism isn’t really my thing, it tends to happen by accident! The “92” comes close to being an exception, partly because its completion was what started me groundhopping- I finished at Doncaster Rovers’ old home Belle Vue in 2006, and partly because I’m no fan of hard and fast rules! Oddly it was surprising I was there. Groundhopping legend Martin “Spud” Hollands phoned to ask whether I was going and preemptively ask for a lift from the station to Gay Meadow. I wasn’t planning on going, but with the ground going at the end of the season a revisit wasn’t even close to being a wasted journey. Continue reading →

Its been many years since I completed the 92, that is the grounds of the 92 clubs that make up the Premier League and EFL. For what little it’s worth I finished at Doncaster Rovers’ old home of Belle Vue, and each season I normally get a new ground to aim for. This season though, the 92 has been reduced to 90, with Coventry City sharing at Birmingham City and Bury FC having been ejected from the EFL. But with Tottenham at their new ground, and Salford City having been promoted into the EFL, I had two new grounds to visit, and you could easily argue Salford is the more interesting case!
