If you’re fortunate to have Terry “The Badge” Hall as a friend, you’ll be well used to seeing two things on his Facebook page. One is his badge stall outside Kingsmeadow for ever single home game his beloved AFC Wimbledon plays, and just beforehand the inevitable gargantuan all-day breakfast at “Fat Boys” just round the corner from Jack Goodchild Way. I’d first been to Kingsmeadow years ago, in 2002 during the Real Dons first season for a Combined Counties League game versus AFC Wallingford. If the visit to Bath City’s Twerton Park was visiting one of the grounds you simply have to see before you die, then back in the day Dorking FC’s Meadowbank Ground was another on that list. Dorking were already struggling following relegation from the Isthmian League and when I visited in 2013 it was to be the club’s last season here. When the ground’s owners, Mole Valley District Council closed Meadowbank down on health and safety grounds, their exile at local rivals Dorking Wanderers’ Westhumble home was to be the death knell for the club. I’m old enough to remember the FA Cup when it took over all of the television on whatever Saturday it fell. You could watch “Cup Final Multi-Coloured Swap Shop” if you so desired, such was the importance attached to the final game of the season. Then after lunch I’d sit with Dad and watch the game, preceeded by the marching band, and the singing of “Abide with me,” and it goes without saying that from the moment I first set eyes on the spectacle I wanted to go to a final. There were a few problems with my idea though….

This one was a complete bonus, although I’d have taken some convincing when becalmed on the M25. I never did find out how the “Leg O’ Mutton” field got its name, but its been on my to-do list for years. Why so long? Probably that doing it was too straightforward! I remember seeing them as the visitors at AFC Wallingford in 2003, they lost 5-1 but I did find out their most famous player was cricketer Bob Willis!

I reached the ground after a trip through millionaire’s row, realising why Chelsea FC have their training ground around here. Apart from the affluent, the area is the home to the site of the Brooklands motor racing circuit, and more locally the Cobham Mill, which dates from 1822, but is the site of milling from medieval times.
