It doesn’t take too much empathy to understand Cadbury Athletic’s problem. Their home is the utterly sublime Cadbury Recreation Ground in Bournville, a ground that every self-respecting football ground enthusiast ought to visit, but one they’ll never be able to improve so they could play Pyramid Football there. It was Coronation Monday and there were no end of games I could have headed to that would have added to a new tick for me, although most were in the lower divisions of the Midland League. But there are grounds that frankly any football fan ought to visit, one is Cadbury Athletic, and my wife Robyn hadn’t been there. It really was an easy decision, wasn’t it? Continue reading →

With the football season over prematurely due to the Coronavirus Pandemic I’m in the unusual position of actually having this blog up to date! So to keep the content coming, and for something to do, I’ll do some old grounds and games where there’s a story to tell.

Saturday 19th February 2011 ko 15.00

Midland Combination Division Two

CADBURY ATHLETIC RESERVES 0

LEAMINGTON HIBERNIAN 1 (Jahmal Clarke 47p)

Now if you were to ask a less experienced groundhopper where Cadbury Athletic play they’d probably tell you at the Triplex Sports & Social Club, Kings Norton in Birmingham. You’d be technically correct but it certainly isn’t the club’s spiritual home- but ticking off the Bournville Recreation does tend to polarise the brethren of the groundhoppers. Continue reading →

This is one of those that fits the category of “Passed it hundred times, so needed to visit,” but there’s a real twist! On one hand I’d certainly never travelled along leafy Ray Hall Lane, in Great Barr, but if you’ve ever travelled southbound down the M5 just south of its intersection with the M6 you may well have spotted two football grounds. One is FC Premier who rather appropriately play in the Premier Division of the Birmingham and District League, the other is the Birmingham FA Ground. Continue reading →
