When the league and I were putting together this event, I found myself thinking back to Steventon, the first game on the first North Berkshire League Hop back in 2011.

Rightly or wrongly I see the North Berks and Witney Hops as being continuations of each other- both are grassroots leagues playing (mostly) in Oxfordshire. I remember a senior (in terms of numbers) groundhopper coming up to me before the event in 2011 to inform me that, in his opinion, a groundhop here couldn’t possibly work. We held 7 hops in the North Berks, and this was to be the 3rd in the Witney & District. And while I’ll be the first to admit that these hops aren’t for every hopper, they certainly do a lot of good for the clubs, I get a lot of personal satisfaction from seeing a good club do well, and any hop organiser will tell you, the smaller clubs tend to make the most effort!

To be a groundhopper you do need a large dose of OCD, and I’ll leave you to judge whether that’s in any way healthy. Some worry about what counts as a suitable game, some as to whether there’s a programme and one or two obsess about whether a goal is scored, they can’t count the ground as visited if it finishes nil-nil! ( I know….) But my little bit of OCD is different…… Continue reading →

For the most part, airports disappoint me. Most of my encounters with them involve waiting and queuing in a place that could be almost anywhere. I remember landing at what was then called Jan Smuts airport in Cape Town, a vision of metal, glass and air conditioning, then stepping outside and experiencing the heat, flies and squalor of the squatter camp outside the perimeter fence. It is a strange way to welcome a visitor.

Golden Ridge, Faringdon

If you drive from Faringdon to Highworth via Coleshill on the B4019 you’ll trace the line of a limestone escarpment that runs more or less from Oxford to Swindon. Its unusual, in that its not white, the stone has a high coral content, giving it a honey-coloured effect. Traditionally many of the local buildings were built of this hardy, tough material, and that also has led to another benefit. Because the limestone is tougher than the surrounding clay, its remained while the surrounding material got eroded away by the waters of time, giving spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.

And regular readers of this blog will know I am a sucker for a good view too! This one looks north and west from the town, towards the likes of Burford, Carterton and Brize Norton, and yes, the famous Folly, that you now know all about!

That’s part of the ridge running downwards from left to right.
