I remember 25 years ago and a bit more not really understanding the magnitude of the hobby. I went through a phase of trying to do one club in each division which is of course the start of a slippery slope. Some App now tells me I’ve completed 35 divisions… so when a league I’d never heard of popped up I was more than a little intrigued!
In this part of the world at Step 6 (promotions from the EFL) you’d play in the Combined Counties League Division One. Below that sits 2 divisions of the Surrey Premier County League and below that the single division Surrey County Intermediate League (Western). Get relegated from that and you’d be playing in the Guildford and Woking Alliance. If my adding up is correct that’s at a nominal Step 10. No, I’m not trying to beat my lowest level record of the Bristol Downs League!
The Traco Club, or to give it its full title the Aldershot Traction Athletic Club was the sports club of the Aldershot & District Traction Company Limited who were a major bus company operating services in the area from 1912 to 1972. A team Aldershot Traction Company entered the FA Cup for 3 years from 1928. These days its a standalone private members club with no end of space for football and bowls. A tip though, the car park does fill up early, use the the unadopted close nearby and park at one end of the pitches.
If you want to know what football is like 10 promotions from the EFL, I’d say no better or worse that at Combined Counties level. The beauty of the game is that the skill level doesn’t have to be high to produce an entertaining game. The visitors Farnborough North End won the league but surprisingly lost this tie, but maybe player availability was an issue? Either way it was an interesting evening out!
