It has to be said that Robyn my wife does come up with our best ideas. She fancied a weekend in North Wales so we spent a few days exploring Snowdonia from a base in Llandudno. For me it was a chance to revisit a lot of the places we visited in the days of the Welsh Alliance Hops and introduce Robyn to some seriously long placenames. But somehow we ended up at one with quite a short name really….

In this part of Wales, you’ll get very used to the Landsker Line, Llandudno is basically English-speaking, but Conwy over the bay you’ll hear Welsh. And head into the foothills and aim for Denbigh and have no doubt- this is about as Welsh speaking as it gets. And yes, I have watched a lot of football in Ceredigion!

You’ll pick your way along narrow lanes, in the most exquisite scenery, and soon enough you’ll see a multiplicity of cars parked up in the trees. The Llannefydd Football Pitch dates from 1999 with the newly formed club joining the Clwyd League then the Welsh Alliance in 2017, 2 years after the final hop in that league. With restructuring of Welsh club football Llanyfydd were placed in the North East Wales Coast League, and were promoted to the third tier Ardal Leagues in 2023.

But what a beautiful place to watch a game! In time you get used to how to photograph gems like these. Its a case of getting the aperture as small as possible so as much as possible is in focus, and boy was there plenty to take in. An added interest was the visitors Mynydd Isa, you may recall my attempts to get see a game there! Although the hosts were comfortably mid-table, the visitors needed a win to guarantee safety. They didn’t get it, and survived due to the division expanding, only Connah’s Quay Town and St Asaph City took the drop.

But as I said, what a backdrop!
