After the exertions of the Northern Hop both Robyn and I took a little time to ourselves. I concentrated myself in Oxford United’s vain attempts to stay in the Championship, and watched with growing concern at what was going on in the North Berkshire League- I’d been on committee there until 2 years ago, but still maintained an interest from afar. But then Robyn fancied an evening game, and there was more than a touch of tragedy about heading here.

I suspect that for some groundhoppers a trip to the Oxhey Jets is what you do for your 747th ground. There is more to the suburb of Watford than just the railway line running into central London (you can hear the trains from the ground), the suburb is known for brewing; I’m sure plenty groundhoppers will be interested to know that there are 6 pubs in the area, mind you there used to be 25!

On arrival we parked adjacent to a soon-to-be demolished swimming pool. That will soon be houses which hints at the fight Oxhey Jets have had to secure their ground. The landlord liked the idea of more houses, but the club have managed to secure a new lease, to their obvious relief.

There was no such positively from the visitors. Just under a week earlier Hillingdon Borough’s ownership had decided to fold the club. I must admit when I visited Breakspear Road 4 years ago, I worried for the club’s future, and after playing this game and a final cup fixture at home, all that’s left of 35 years of football is the name held by former chair Dee Dhand. I wonder what value there is in the name, and who, if anyone will take on the ground?

I’ve seen a few games like this, and they are always a tough watch. The Jets won, courtesy of a Dominic Mosca goal, cheered on by an enthusiastic band of young Ultras behind the goal. I liked them, if only for taking away the “End of Season” sense to it all. We headed for home, and I concentrated on the good news on the Jets’ lease. Hopefully someone will revive Hillingdon Borough soon.
