Sometimes things work out in your favour. Work took me to Cornwall for the day so a trip to Westonzoyland on my way home made sense, and no I didn’t ever foresee heading to Bridgwater on the M5 northbound to see a Peninsula League game!
Middlezoy Rovers play in the adjacent village of Westonzoyland, but I’m probably dealing in semantics, the aerodrome, more exactly the former RAF Westonzoyland on part of whose footprint edge the club plays, more or less straddles the two villages. Certainly the transformation since 1973 from a club playing at a ground with little water pressure and an old tin bath is remarkable- and highly impressive!
The issue, from an organised groundhop perspective is that they’ve somehow slipped through the net. If they’d have been in either the Peninsula League or the Western League at the right time then either Phil Hiscox or ourselves at GroundhopUK would have been all over them to host the masses. And speaking of groundhoppers it was a genuine pleasure to watch the game with a legend of the hobby- and I’m more than aware that the term is horribly overused. If you’ve not heard of Martin Bamforth, then chances are you’ve heard of some of his exploits- the wrong Hibs for example; the man is the best company you can imagine.
Not that we needed the art of conversation to keep us amused, although we’ve all been to games where it was needed! Here two well-matched sides slugged it out on a wet pitch. I’m sure Cullompton will be disappointed not to have won, they led twice after all but Middlezoy’s comback was stirring stuff. All the best to both sides, and it was genuine wrench to say goodbye to Martin- as I tend to say,
“See you somewhere daft!”
