Saturday on the West Wales Premier Hop was slightly odd, in the sense that the only game in the league was this one, in the pretty village of Llangennech.

A few years ago I’m sure much would have been made of the village’s connection to newsreader Huw Edwards- he grew up here, and a mural was painted in his honour. Times change, secrets were uncovered, and the mural is now under whitewash.

If you want to know the kind of football I seek out on my Saturday afternoons then Llangennech Park would be a fair example. It’s a facility bang in the centre of the village, a real hub for all that’s good. There’s bowls, rugby and football with the latter two sharing a pitch. There’s a small “bleachers” style stand which reminded me of lower league Swedish football idrottsplats, the Welsh equivalent is what of course is what Llangennech Park is.

There was a gentle charm about Llangennech AFC, with the “Groundhopper Special” menu selling well, even to those who’d already had breakfast back at the hotel. At the gate the mugs sold nearly as well as the brollies- perhaps folks saw the weather forecast for Sunday.

I enjoyed the game, including the fracas at the end! I think those of us who were at Dafen Welfare‘s hop game enjoyed the experience and so were pleased to see them get something out of this game, rather than the pasting they took back in 2023. All the best to them, and all the best to Llangennech- both are a credit to themselves and the league.
