I must admit, a trip to France wasn’t on my list of priorities for the end of the 24/25 football season, but sometimes a random conversation changes everything. Here the conversation was between Robyn and Chris Garrett (he’s a weatherman) at the hop game at Newquay. He’d spotted a fairly random game at Racing Club Calais on a Saturday evening making it straightforward enough to get there and back via the Channel Tunnel in a day.

Now there are plenty of grounds you’d happily visit once, but very few you’d revisit time and time again, so when Chesham United volunteer Giles Stevenson suggested an end of season charity game, and one I could pair with the North Berkshire cup final that evening, Robyn and I jumped at the chance. And now I think of it, the suggestion came on March 1st, just after Giles handed Robyn a bunch of Daffodils as it was St David’s Day. The joke that Bristolian Robyn is basically Welsh is a long running joke. A joke you see….

If you drive on the A418 between Thame and Aylesbury then inevitably you’ll pass through the pretty village of Stone. It’s one of those places that thousands of people drive through giving the place barely a thought. But there is plenty to enthuse….

The issue I tend to have with some locations is that it can be difficult to predict just how long it is going to take to get there? That goes double for anything within the M25 so with another trip to New Eltham in the offing, I planned a little detour with the idea being that it could be ditched if the traffic misbehaved- on this occasion it didn’t, so we spent a few minutes in Deptford.

If you are ever stuck for a game, and wonder where to head to on a Saturday I’ve long opined that a fair stating point are either of Peter Miles’ excellent articles “20 Glorious” and “20 More Glorious Non-League Grounds“

Sadly, the likes of Consett’s wonderful Belle Vue are no more, but there are still some gems to go after, and I for one have always got Pete’s list in the back of my mind when I’m thinking about where to go. Beck Lane in Heckmondwike is on the second list, so it was an easy decision when I spotted they were at home, and I was free…

Att 26 at Lord Halsbury Playing Fields, Northolt

For those in the know, the Middlesex County League almost always provides a source of late season, non floodlit evening games. There is a quirk, the league is one of very few that still uses the Mitoo website fixtures but it is reliable, so Robyn and I used a Middlesex game to bookend what had been a fairly brutal April for football.

I know I’ve said it before, but I do think every football fan ought to go and watch the Sherborne Harriers at least once. I was honoured to take 120 or so hoppers there during the days of the Witney Hop and the day turned into something far more than a fundraiser, important though that is at grassroots.

There really wasn’t a more appropriate game for Robyn and I. After the Peninsula Hop we’d broken the journey back to Oxford seeing family in Bristol, so hopping over the border to Cardiff for Robyn to tick off the Cardiff City Stadium and me to watch Oxford United just made sense!

I remember back in the day, well 2015, GroundhopUK sorted of hosted a game at Cardiff Met FC. For us it was a precursor to a hop over the next two days in the Ceredigion League. There were all the trappings of a hop game, but it wasn’t part of the schedule, and we saw similar here at Honiton. The reason, though was entirely different…
