Hop organiser Phil Hiscox summed the final day’s action neatly, “You’ll be blown away at Sticker, soaked at St Dennis, but you’ll be okay at Bude.” He proved to be completely accurate! 

The village of Sticker takes its unusual name from the Cornish “Steyker,” or “New Place” as the village grew to service the tin, copper, and silver mines at the Great Hewas Mine to its west. But with that close-to-iconic name I was a little surprised the merchandising didn’t extend to a “Sticker” sticker! I’m sure it could have been done both cheaply and profitably!

Like Helston the previous evening, Sticker’s home Burngullow Park has had improvements to allow progression in 2011 to the Peninsula League. Here the changes are more subtle, mainly the installation of hard standing, the stand extended at its wings, and a pitchside rail replacing a rather dangerous looking cable. I visited back in September 2010 and saw Sticker beat local rivals Probus 7-0 in an East Cornwall League, Premier Division fixture. Here’s what it looked like nearly 6 years ago.

I certainly didn’t expect to see another 7 goals!!

The ground isn’t straightforward to find and I was impressed at how quickly the club managed to get everyone in, and afterward shepherd everyone out in plenty of time to make it to St Dennis. Other than that the club coped well with a huge crowd, and I can vouch for just how loud the PA was!

On the pitch Sticker put Wadebridge to the sword in much the same way they’d done to Probus 6 years previously. In fact save for the howling gale, the only difference was that Wadebridge managed a consolation, via a Tom Marks thunderbolt. That was scant consolation though, after Sam Kenny’s first half hat trick had utterly destroyed them.

It was one of those games so one-sided that the excitement came from the goals, rather than the competition, but for Sticker I’m sure it’ll be a morning where they’ll gain as much satisfaction off the pitch as they did on it.
