It was one of those morning starts that was dictated more by when the hotel stopped serving breakfasts than what time our coach needed to leave Ulriksdal. You even could see a road sign for Danderyds sjukhus (hospital) from our hotel. It meant a relaxed breakfast with the inevitable crispy bacon, grilled frankfurteresque sausages, and for the more adventurous- pickled herrings! Continue reading →

Back in 2007 if you had have suggested to either organiser Kim Hedwall or I that in 9 years’ time we’d be sat on a coach to Arlanda airport to do the pick-ups for the tenth Swedish Hop we’d have laughed at you. In fact we’d have probably only just stopped laughing now! For the most part the Swedish Hop has made copious use of Kim’s encyclopedic knowledge of the Swedish non-league scene, to the extent that on at least one occasion – Strömsbergs– its taken me some time to work out exactly where I was!

The final game in this year’s Swedish hop took the party back towards Uppsala, and the pretty agricultural district of Heby. In so many ways Ramsjövallen was exactly the kind of ground we like to feature. Its isolated, pretty, and if it wasn’t for Kim Hedwall organising this annual event the coach party would never of even heard of it, let alone paid it a visit. A closer look also shows the other side of organising a groundhop too, the benefit to the club. Continue reading →

Entry & Programme 20sek

From our base in Uppsala, we set off due south towards Stockholm before striking out east into the outer reaches of the archipelago. We reached the municipality of Tåby most famous for the large numbers of Viking runic stones found here, and less so for being the home of DJ and producer Eric Prydz.

House music seemed a million miles away as the coach pulled into the small town of Viggbyholm nestling in Stora Värtan, an inlet of the Baltic Sea. There are beaches and boat clubs, and the area was opened up in no small part by the opening of the Roslagsbanan, a 891 mm narrow gauge railway running from Stockholm Östra station out north and eastwards. In many respects this game would have been perfect as the final game of the hop 24 hours later, Märsta (pronounced mosh-ta) is at the edge of Stockholm’s northernmost suburbs, and is close to Arlanda airport. As such its a typical dormitory suburb, with the fields gradually giving way to houses, then the churches and the schools. At the centre of it all is the Pendeltåg or commuter train station to central Stockholm. The town does have the distinction of being where the first telegraph pole in Sweden was erected.

It has to be said that Riala’s home, Lundbyvalen is rather isolated, in fact so isolated that the coach driver had some difficulty in finding it. All rather different from the stock in trade for the coach driver these days, the endless school runs. It was well worth the wait, and Kim Hedwall being the consummate hop organiser he is, had factored in plenty of time as a failsafe. Time in these matters is a precious commodity! Continue reading →

Kim Hedwall has been running the Swedish hop since 2007, and this first game on the 9th hop was our 50th game at our 48th ground. In those years we’ve been rained on, two of the party have been roped in as linesmen, and we’ve appeared on Swedish national TV and “Offside” magazine, the Swedish equivalent of “4-4-2.” We’ve never taken a party of more than 30, due in part to a misunderstanding about what the event is for.

10 sek is roughly £1

From Storvik it was a 35 minute drive east and slightly north to Gävle, and the suburb of Hille, which again seemed to have an air of the country about the place. The coach party’s punctuality and Thomas’ driving expertise meant that there was time for a talk about the club from both manager and chairman. It proved to be extremely informative, with the club on the cusp of a major decision.

The city of Gävle is the traditional capital of Norrland.  The name derives from the word gavel, meaning river banks in Old Swedish and referring to the Gavleån (Gävle River). The oldest settlement was called Gavle-ägarna, which means “Gavel-owners”. This name was shortened to Gavle, then Gefle, and finally Gävle.

In more recent times the city has become famous for a burning goat! Continue reading →

During the previous evening’s entertainment Kim Hedwall seemed rather distracted and was on the phone for most of the second half. On the way back to Uppsala, he let the coach party know what had happened.

After taking full advantage of the hotel’s buffet breakfast, for me, the final piece in the Swedish hop jigsaw arrived. That of course is Thomas Nybom of Interbus coaches. He’s driven each and every one 6 Swedish hops, and now greets us as old friends. He didn’t let us down with the transport either, the coach was high-spec, and brand new!

It took around 90 minutes to reach Karlskoga, the birthplace of Alfred Nobel, and the small village of Immetorp lies virtually adjacent. Kim and I visited Källmossen IP a couple of weeks earlier, and I’d been asked “Do groundhoppers like beer?” Obviously I’d replied in the affirmative, but I wasn’t expecting the sheer volume of the stuff they’d bought! Three brands, and at least 3 times as much as we could drink. I gave it my best shot though! Player Johan Karlsson (who I saw score at Nordmark) told us all about the history of the club and showed us the club’s old ground 200m away. The line-ups were posted on a whiteboard for us, and a barbeque was fired up.

My only concern was the dark clouds as there was little or no cover, but the rain held off until the final few seconds of the game. Another coach arrived with the away fans, who like us were off to Degerfors after this game. A makeshift entrance was rigged up for them. I told Thomas, and he moved the coach so we could make a sharper exit than them! You need a great driver for a hop, and Thomas, despite not really being a football fan is the perfect man for the job.

The game in truth failed to live up to the wonderful hospitality. The visitors annoyed 24 British visitors by scoring just before half-time, but we were consoled by at least avoiding a nill-nil! Immetorp made a comeback impossible with the dismissal of Martin El Naga for his second booking, closely followed by Fredrik Zetterberg for giving referee Davoud Ataei a mouthful of abuse for the decision.

That was a real shame, particularly as assistant manager Dennis Gustafsson found time at the end to come over to the coach, shake Kim and I’s hands and thank the party for coming to visit. Dennis, it was our pleasure to visit a classy group of people. I wish you and your club all the best.
