For those in the know, the Middlesex County League almost always provides a source of late season, non floodlit evening games. There is a quirk, the league is one of very few that still uses the Mitoo website fixtures but it is reliable, so Robyn and I used a Middlesex game to bookend what had been a fairly brutal April for football.

It was an odd experience driving here. Existing the M40 at Junction 1 then picking through the edges of suburban London, where the capital collides with the Slough area. So much so I was glad my new car is ULEZ compliant, even now I’m not completely sure whether I tripped one of TfL’s cameras! If I’d have been driving my old car, I’d have had to pay, just to avoid the risk of an unwitting fine!

Ever had a ground you know you’ve been to, but can’t work out when? For years my mystery ground was the Middlesex Stadium in Ruislip. I know I watched Hillingdon Borough around 15 years ago on a Saturday because my girlfriend of the time insisted I got home by 6:30 as we had guests. I was a very different hopper then, these days I were given that constraint, I’d take in a non-floodlit game locally. Floodlit grounds are a finite resource to a groundhopper! Continue reading →

The hobby of groundhopping does lend itself to a little tactical planning. Take this Tuesday as an example. You know there are a finite number of grounds with floodlights so you’ve prioritised those on to midweeks when they’re in use. Then you look at which lights will get used less than others and prioritise those. The Step 7 Middlesex League schedules virtually no floodlit games; the league has few clubs with lights and so plans without taking them into account. But this one looked interesting. I suppose I should start by answering the obvious question, its London Post Office Sports and Social Association. The club plays at the London Post Office Association Club, close to Sudbury Hill Harrow railway station and Sudbury Hill tube station. Continue reading →

The roots of this fixture lie with QPR fan, journalist and programme enthusiast Tony Incenzo. For a few years now he’s organised early kick-offs in the Middlesex County League, with the host team printing a programme, and laying on refreshments too. Its simplicity is its genius, most if not all hoppers will find a 3 o’clock kick-off to pair it off with and so it really is a case of buy one get one free, at least in terms of time! I wish Tony Incenzo would organise more of these Middlesex morning kick-offs, and yes I’m aware Slough isn’t in Middlesex! The format is simple enough, a programme is always produced, then its up to the hopper where to head afterwards, there is after all around two-and-a-half hours to get somewhere!

Singh Sabha were possibly the most interesting club featured thus far. Formed in 1977 the club were originally called FC Lions, but changed name when they came under the wing of the local Continue reading →
