The Swedish Hop’s cost of £350 included bed and breakfast for two nights, all transport in Sweden, together with entry fees for all games, and a goodie bag!

It seemed unusual to not be packing our suitcases. The Swedish Hop was ending, but Robyn, Adrian and I had booked an extra night in Hammarby Sjöstad before travelling to Tallinn on the overnight ferry on Monday evening. It allowed us the most precious of commodities, time and we managed to make full use of it, but not as a few folks expected!

If you are ever stuck for a game, and wonder where to head to on a Saturday I’ve long opined that a fair stating point are either of Peter Miles’ excellent articles “20 Glorious” and “20 More Glorious Non-League Grounds“

Sadly, the likes of Consett’s wonderful Belle Vue are no more, but there are still some gems to go after, and I for one have always got Pete’s list in the back of my mind when I’m thinking about where to go. Beck Lane in Heckmondwike is on the second list, so it was an easy decision when I spotted they were at home, and I was free…

I have a mate Graeme who has an unusual hobby, he collects Chinese takeaway menus. Other than that and the groundhopping he’s quite a well-adjusted chap he’s a schoolteacher, but if you’re in a car and you pass the takeaway, your journey will be paused for him to dash out and collect another one for his collection. Being a groundhopper helps his cause and other hoppers collect for him, so he’s got menus from places such as Hungary, the USA and Malta but I think the centrepiece of his collection ought to be a British takeaway menu from China!
