It was a day of coincidences, another chance to watch a Welsh pre-season friendly in June, and another chance to double it up with a heritage steam train ride. This time the railway was full-sized, although the Llangollen Railway runs on tracks once part of the Ruabon to Barmouth line axed under Beeching. So back on GroundhopUK duty, which turned out to be very much a case of “Everything the same, everything different.” Being based at the University of Chester was nothing new, as was distributing well over 130 programme packs and room keys, and running two coaches to all of the games. However much was different too; the rooms were newly built, and quite frankly huge, we were using a new coach company, and this second trip to the Welsh Alliance brought us challenges we’d never encountered before. We’ll always rate ourselves to find an agreeable solution to most things, but this weekend tested our abilities. More over the next 10 articles. Continue reading →

I think I’ve mentioned in a previous article how I find borders fascinating, with the elements of both sides usually in evidence. This part of the world seems to be the exception that proves the rule.

Once you cross the River Dee past Oswestry, you are unquestionably in Wales, the only debate is whether you are in the Mid, or the Northern part! In fact it seems that the cross-border influence seems more evident on the English side with Oswestry having a Welsh identity (in Welsh it’s Croesoswallt) and other settlements such as Gobowen having Welsh names.
