Pre-season friendly

SPARTANS YOUTH 1 (Ralph 90)

WEALDSTONE U23 1 (86)

Att 31 at Carville Hall Park North , Lionel Road North, Brentford.

Free Entry

Where do I start with this one? Probably with the most obvious, we were taking advantage of a club that normally groundshares playing a rare game at home. Spartans Youth are starting their third season in the first division of the Combined Counties League, but have groundshared at Northwood, and this season at Bedfont FC, a little nearer to the planes flying into Heathrow!

Thames Valley Premier League – Division One

ROTHERFIELD UNITED 1 (Clarke 45p)

READING YMCA 2 (Hormola 7 Donegan 61p)

Att c24 at Bishopswood Sports Field, Gallowstree Common.

Free Entry

Given I’d not seen a game at Bishopswood this was something of a sentimental return for me. Back in the day I had a blonde girlfriend who worked for a brewery, which did have a few advantages. The brewery in question was Brakspear in Henley-on-Thames, and we spent many an evening ticking off the pubs of the Brakspear estate- it was clear looking back that the groundhopping gene was active even then! One of the best pubs was the Reformation at Gallowstree Common and I remember driving past the Bishopswood Sports Field and me thinking “I really ought to see a game there!” It only took another 25 years…. Combined Counties League Division One

EVERSLEY & CALIFORNIA 0

CHESSINGTON & HOOK UNITED 3 (McLaughlin 11 54 Bowles 68og)

Att 23

Entry & Programme £5

After the exertions of the Lowland League Hop I wanted something reasonably local and after 1700 or so grounds the Hampshire side of the border with Berkshire is just about as good as it gets for a floodlit tick these days!

It’s fair to say Eversley is an extremely affluent area, with the Prep schools dotted around the executive houses and the forests, Will Carling lives in this area, reckoned to be the least deprived area in the UK. Of course as is usually the case none of that helps the local football team. Continue reading →

KNAPHILL 0

Att 31 at N.E.S.C.O.T. Reigate Road, Epsom

Entry FREE

No Programme

I suppose the first question is what is NESCOT? It’s the North East Surrey College of Technology, not that I saw too much of it, the pitch was the other side of the car park from the college buildings so the only thing I learned was that if you fancy becoming a gas fitter, you’re in the right place! I do like these friendlies where the home team is in a groundshare, Athletic share at Chessington & Hook’s Chalky Lane ground, but this isn’t a case of the club simply playing at their home, more a case of simply hiring a pitch. Programme 50p

I’m writing about this one 5 days after the event which isn’t necessarily a bad thing  as I can try to place my trip to Mill Road in some sort of context. I’d seen photos of the ground with the castle in the background and had wanted to visit for years it seemed a straightforward plan to head via Eastleigh and still have plenty of time to wend my way along the A27 and visit the cornucopia of second-hand bookshops before the game. As ever, life didn’t work out that way, the A34 and M3 were choked by Olympic travellers Continue reading →
