From the crush at Truro the Peninsula Hop returned to a sense of normality at Wadebridge. That said, the rains persisted, and the fact that we’d got a soaking meant I really didn’t fancy another at Bodieve Park.

Consider if you will the lot of the groundhop organiser. You’ve got plenty (believe me!) to worry about but one major issue is the middle game of just about any day. You know that there will be no end of competition for the groundhoppers’ attention at 3pm or thereabouts. Here the organiser Phil Hiscox had a real dilemma.

Saturday saw the Peninsula Hop start as south-west as we were going to get, in Redruth’s environs and for the next 2 days plus, basically headed north-east. Despite the geography there was little question that in purely groundhopper terms St Day would be the most popular Peninsula League club on the weekend’s event.

This year’s South West Peninsula League Hop was especially interesting on a few levels. The first was that the hop wasn’t just in the Peninsula League, organiser Phil Hiscox had decided to take in clubs in both the National League South and the St Piran Leagues. It certainly added more colour to an always excellent event.

If you’re going to visit all the iconic football grounds in England I’d suggest that Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough would be close to the top of just about any list. The ground dates from 1899, and post World War II became one of the country’s pre-eminent grounds. The first of 26 FA Cup semi finals here here took place in 1915.

You could argue this is Witney Town’s third incarnation. The first played Witney Town played at Marriotts Close, got as far as the Southern League, moved to Oakey Park later renamed Marriotts Stadium in 1992, but were controversially folded by chairman Brian Constable in 2001. A phoenix club, Witney United were formed and based at Marriotts Stadium and entered the Hellenic League in 2002. They renamed themselves Witney Town in 2011, but debts saw the club liquidated in 2013.

It has to be said there was a lot more time available to get from Little Oakley to Takeley than there had from Benfleet to Little Oakley earlier in the day. So much so there was enough time to visit a nearby chippy and listen to the planes roaring over our heads, taking off and landing at Stansted airport. Once we arrived at Station Road it was obvious we were, like at Benfleet, visiting something big.

After the Benfleet game it seemed that the hordes scattered to the four winds. There were no end of options for the middle game of the three on the Essex Senior League’s Non League Day event, albeit those of us with the passports were limited to clubs within the league. For me I had two options that would represent a new ground, Little Oakley or Athletic Newham and it was fairly obvious which one I favoured.

After two organised hops in March on one level the last thing I wanted was another. But then there’s always something to learn from other folks’ events, and I was the only part of the GroundhopUK team available! There was also more to it than just a set of staggered kick-offs too, with it being the league’s “Non League Day” attraction, and a fundraiser for the “Prostate Cancer UK” charity too. But what really interested me was the advance ticketing…
