When you think about it, it is easy to protest, “I’m against…” or “I’m anti..” but far more difficult to actually do something concrete about it. In time I suspect the great achievement of FC United will be turning all that anger into something far more positive. Continue reading →

When I see the Bedfordshire officials to some extent I see my own reflection. I’ve got so engrained in the world of the North Berkshire League it’s got to the point where I can look at a side in the Bedfordshire League and understand them, the two leagues are that similar in how they operate.  Continue reading →

It has to be said Storthes Hall in Kirkburton is an unusual place to watch a game. The manor house used to be mental hospital with a quite dreadful reputation, and lay derelict until bought and converted into student accommodation by the University of Huddersfield. It’s the kind of place where if you’re the kind of patron who likes to get to the ground 10 seconds before kickoff you shouldn’t try it here! Continue reading →

Programme £3

It was 6.30 and there I was stood sheltering under the canopy over turnstile 1 waiting for Alan to open up. I watched the other Oxford fans waiting alongside me, and we all had the same expression on our faces. We were nervous, and despite there being 50 or so stood there it was quiet, I could even hear Joey Beauchamp’s footsteps as he walked over to the Quad Bar hospitality entrance. Being an Oxford United legend affords you that luxury. Continue reading →

Southern Combination Division Two

HURSTPIERPOINT 1 (Ojo 44)

FERRING 1 (Godfrey 75og)

Att 9

Entry FREE

Programme £1

As far as I’m concerned Hurstpierpoint is the village with the long name whose sign you see on the A23 north of Brighton as you pass Hickstead Show Jumping Ground. The name of the village os a classic case of combining the Old English word for wood “Hurst” with the surname of the family that were lords of the manor here. Other than that the village is known for Hurstpierpoint College whose must famous alumnus is former Master of College Sabine Baring-Gould who wrote the hymn “Onward Christian Soldiers.”

Our taxi driver back to the airport summed the position up well,

“I’m a fan,” he said, “But I’m not watching while that man’s in charge.”

That explained why there was less than 3,500 in the frankly palatial surroundings of the Arena Nationala, in Bucharest, and when the stadium holds 55,634 the place felt empty even down to only one ticket booth being open. But how it ended up this way is quite a story. Continue reading →

It’s not the best start to your footballing day when you ask your taxi driver for “Stadionul Fratia-Vulcan” and despite asking another driver, he has no idea where the place is! With local non-league expert Andrei unavailable we’d taken the Bucharest metro south to Aparatorii Patriei (Defenders of the Motherland!) station and found what we really wanted was the Vulcan factory in Berceni but what threw our driver was that it has been closed for many years! We travelled by metro south to Piata Sudului and from there should have caught a bus to the Stadionul Rocar. The trouble was that in the mad rush the day before to get to Buftea we’d neglected to buy passes for Bucharest’s bus, trolley, and tram network. The irony of that omission was yet to be revealed to us though… Continue reading →
