This season the Midland Combination has introduced an Under 21 league, with Kickoffs at 11am on a Saturday, which is heaven for a hopper. More so because many of the grounds used aren’t used for adult football.
Kilsby Lane is a case in point. Beautifully appointed, the main pitch would grace a league far above the levels which appear there. Don’t be fooled by the name either, as this club has nothing to do with the club playing out of Butlin Road.
Whatever the politics of have a town with two clubs with virtually indentical names, this was a great game to watch, and well refereed too. Rugby will wonder how they didn’t win, and Kettering will wonder how they left Jordan Cross on the bench until the 59th minute. I’ll be dipping into this league some more!
And all the while the Joe Spooner Cup tournament was taking place. For children, hundreds of young people were clearly having a whale of a time. It made me wish I’d had something like that available 30 years ago.
